The Northern Colorado men's cross country team faces strong competition on Saturday
The UNC men's cross country team will get its final test run prior to the Big Sky Conference Championships on November 2nd when it competes at the Arturo Barrios Invitational on Saturday morning at the Watts Cross Country course, hosted by Texas A&M University.
Following a stellar runner up performance two weeks ago at the Rim Rock Classic, the Bears have been training hard in preparation for the final push towards the Championship portion of their season.
"It's fantastic to see the number of teams that will be present this weekend, it's going to be one heck of a competition," stated Director of Track and Field and Cross Country, Wayne Angel.
Thirty-one teams will be competing in the Arturo Barrios Invitational on Saturday. Among the large field of teams, 18 men's programs are ranked among the top 15 in their respective regions. Five regions will be represented, Mid -Atlantic, Mountain, South Central, South and West. Among the field is Middle Tennessee State University who is ranked 17th in the nation and second in the South Region.
A return to live action at the Barrios Invitational brings the ensuing chapter of the storyline that has developed over the course of the season for the men's program. The UNC men's team continues to excel with outstanding performances, characterized by its strong tendency to keep a" tight pack" while racing. The team reduced the spread between its number one runner and number five runners to 14 seconds at the Rim Rock Classic two weeks ago.
The Barrios Invitational represents the UNC's final chance to improve during the regular season, and Angel has a plan in mind to make sure that his team gets the most out of this opportunity.
"We are stronger, faster and smarter at this point in the season. Our competitive instinct and drive are at an extremely high level, We must have faith in our training and the process. I expect some great individual as well as team performances this weekend," Angel stated.
The men's race kicks off at 8 am MT. UNC and Idaho State will be the lone representatives from the Mountain region. The Bears are ranked 15th and Bengals 14th will have a chance to scout each other. The meet will provide the most rigorous selection of regional adversaries the Bears have faced to date.
