CHEYENNE, Wyo.— Toeing the line just up the road, the University of Northern Colorado cross country teams got their first taste of action at the Wyoming Invitational on Saturday morning.
Racing through 5,000 meters at the Little America Golf Course, the men's team placed third overall with 89 points while the women tallied 103 points for fourth.
"It was nice to lace up the racing spikes again," assistant coach Stormie Sickler said. "The team had good energy and we went out aggressively during both the men's and women's races."
Each placing 19th in their respective races, Chloe Rylance led the UNC women's side while Jesse Hayward paced the men's team.
Hayward completed the circuit in 15 minutes, 40.7 second and was followed by Zach Wells, who crossed in 29th place with a 16:20.8. Just shy of the top 30, Isaac Rascon placed 32nd with a 16:34.9.
"Chloe (Rylance) and Jesse (Hayward) both showed their strength and hard work in the preseason," Sickler said. "We had a lot of athletes perform exceptionally well especially with opening their cross country seasons at 6,000-feet of elevation! We are very proud of our Bears today!"
Rylance covered the 5,000-meter distance in 19:15.3 for the women. Crossing consecutively, Summer Olson, Shantell Hafner, and Julia Brown gave the UNC women four runners in the top 30 with Olson leading the trio with a 19:45.9 for the 28th position.
"Overall, it was a solid first race for the season," Sickler said. "Looking forward, the team is eager to race again when we head to Nebraska in two weeks!"
