UNC women's cross country races in its final tune-up before championship season at the Blazer Classic
Northern Colorado's women's cross country team heads south this weekend to compete in the Blazer Classic, hosted by UAB. The race is set for Friday, October 17 at 8 am MT.
The meet is UNC's final tune-up before hosting the Big Sky Championships on November 2nd at Boomerang Golf Course and the Bears are looking forward to coming out with a strong performance.
"We had an intrasquad time trial this week that seems to have lit a fire underneath the team. We are all hungry to knock out some fast times. This meet is going to be a great opportunity," assistant track and field and cross country coach Stormie Sickler said. "The course is a very fast, honest, 6k course, weather permitting we will be able to set ourselves up very well heading into championship season."
The Bears have shown improvement each time out this season including at the Rim Rock Classic where they finished in eighth place of a very competitive field.
Competing alongside the Bears will be Alabama, Florida State, Florida A&M, Mississippi State, Nicholls State, Southern Alabama and many more in the 30 team race.
"I expect each of the girls to have a personal best this meet, and I will not be surprised if one or two of them put down some incredible times.," Sickler added. "We are going up against a very large spread of athletes. With how we are looking physically and mentally, I'm confident we will be able to place very well amongst some highly competitive teams. Our workouts have been showing that our training volume has been working. The strength is there and now we are ready to start tapering and race some of our fastest times this season!"
