UNC women's basketball five-game win streak was snapped by Montana State Monday night.
A balanced attack from Montana State and first half turnovers from Northern Colorado were key factors as UNC's five-game win streak was snapped on Monday night. Montana State came into Bank of Colorado Arena and defeated UNC 79-66. The Bears move to 10-5 on the year and 5-1 in Big Sky play, while MSU improved to 9-7 overall and 4-2 in the Big Sky.
MSU had five players score in double figures, led by Tori Martell's 19 points off the bench. Meanwhile, Northern Colorado turned the ball over 16 times, including 10 times in the first half.
Savannah Smith led the Bears once again in scoring with 27 points, while Ali Meyer put together her second career double-double scoring 10 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
Northern Colorado started the game hot going up 9-0 as they made their first three 3-pointers of the game. By the first quarter media timeout, UNC led 16-9 and was shooting 87.5 percent from the field. Unfortunately for UNC, that pace would not keep up.
Montana State closed the first quarter on a 16-2 run to lead 22-18. The Bobcats went on the run thanks to going 6-of-9 from behind the arc. Both teams shot over 40 percent from the field in the quarter with UNC shooting 46.2 percent and MSU 43.8.
Northern Colorado and Montana State cooled off shooting in the second quarter, but it was turnovers that MSU took advantage of to grow its lead. UNC turned the ball over six times in the quarter leading to extra possessions for the Bobcats to expand their lead to 12 at the half.
UNC entered the fourth down 58-48 but made a run to cut the lead to four with 6:03. Montana State stayed composed and responded with a quick 9-0 run to push the lead back to double figures ending any hopes of a UNC comeback.
