UNC women's basketball's fourth quarter comeback fell short Thursday afternoon
Savannah Smith drained an NBA range 3-pointer with 16 seconds left to tie the game against Weber State at 54, but a J'aiamoni Welch-Coleman free throw with 1.8 seconds left lifted the Wildcats over the Bears 55-54.
Northern Colorado had stormed back from an eight-point deficit heading into the fourth quarter, by holding WSU to 3-of-11 shooting in the final 10 minutes. UNC made a 5-0 and 4-0 run to cut the lead to three and two respectively until Smith tied it with 16 seconds left.
Welch-Coleman drew what would be the game-winning foul on a drive down the left baseline as UNC's Ali Meyer was called for a push on the double team just before time expired for overtime. After making the first free throw, Welch-Coleman's second attempt rattled off the rim and the rebound bounced around to run out the remainder of the clock.
Both team's offenses struggled shooting throughout the game as WSU shot 35.1 percent to UNC's 34.0. The Bears outrebounded the Wildcats by seven (41-37), but turnovers evened the game as Northern Colorado committed 19.
Two UNC players finished in double figures scoring. Micayla Isenbart led the team with 11 points, while Bridget Hintz added in 10.
The two teams went into the break tied at 29, but as UNC struggled shooting in the third quarter, going 2-of-12. Weber State took advantage of Bears missed shots by going on a 7-0 run to lead by as much as nine at one point in the game.
What they said
Head Coach Jenny Huth
"We made some adjustments in the second half. We didn't play that much with Savannah Smith as she was on a minutes limit. We played a 2-2-1 zone that we had not run at all thing year and switched to a 2-3 zone as well to change the flow of the game. We were doing our best to adjust when there was a lid on the basket. One thing we have to do is take better care of the ball. We had 19 turnovers. Some of that is on me and some of that is on them. I don't know a great team that turns the ball over 19 times a game. I take full ownership of not being able to find that soft spot where our team can adjust and take care of the ball better."
