UNC preps for home matches vs. Idaho and Eastern Washington
What a start to conference play for Northern Colorado, the Bears beat Montana, 2-1 in double overtime, for the program's first win in Missoula since 2006.
"Wins in the league, especially on the road are vital going into the next week," said UNC head coach Tim Barrera. "We know that every year the game is going to be a one-goal game or ends in a draw."
So what's next for UNC?
They return home for a pair of matches against two teams who look to be in the running for a Big Sky title. The weekend starts with a visit from Idaho.
"They have a new coach and had a great start to Big Sky play. They are playing well and scoring a lot of goals," Barrera said.
The Vandals, a preseason pick to finish seventh, have jumped out to a 2-0 start with big wins against Portland State, 4-0, and Sacramento State, 2-0. So what is going to be the key to slowing down the hot start the UI has gotten off to?
"I think the biggest advantage we will have against Idaho is the fact we are back playing at home," Barrera said.
Idaho Insight:
-Â Â Â Idaho comes in with a 5-5-1 record and 2-0 in the conference.
-Â Â Â The Vandals are the highest scoring team in Big Sky play
-Â Â Â Idaho was honored for its hot start by having Bridget Daley named Offensive Player of the Week and Makayla Presgrave Defensive Player of the Week.
-Â Â Â Daley netted a hat trick against the Vikings.
-Â Â Â Presgrave picked up a pair of shutouts in net.
Â
Matchup Quick Hits:
-Â Â Â UNC and Idaho come into play as the leading scoring teams in the Big Sky.
-Â Â Â There are no common opponents on the schedule
-Â Â Â UNC won the last meeting, 1-0, last season in Greeley.
-Â Â Â Idaho owns a 5-2-1 record in the series.
While Idaho comes into the weekend as the upstart program, Eastern Washington started the season as the team everyone was gunning for. The Eagles won the conference last season and were the preseason pick to do so again.
"They are young, much like we are. We know they are going to defend and will always play hard," Barrera said.
EWU started Big Sky play with a dud, however, losing at home to Sacramento State, who went on to get shutout by the Vandals. They rebounded by beating Portland State, 3-2.
Eagle Eggs:Â
-Â Â Â Eastern plays Montana before coming to Greeley and will enter weekend play with a 5-4-2 record and 1-1 in Big Sky play.
-Â Â Â Kelsee Winston leads the conference in shutouts with four this season.
-Â Â Â Jenny Chavez and Brooke Dunbar lead EWU with two goals each.
-Â Â Â As a team, EWU is allowing just .94 goals a match.
"We know that we are going to have to be creative in the way we attack against their defense," Barrera said.
Matchup Quick Hits:
- UNC and EWU both played Colorado State, the Bears lost 2-1 and the Eagles won, 2-0.
- The two teams played twice last season, EWU won both.
- Prior to 2017, UNC hadn't lost to the Eagles since 2008 going 5-0-3.
- Eastern and Northern have played 15 times, the Bears own a 7-5-3 record.
After a sour end to non-conference play, UNC got a goal from Maddie Roberts in the 87th min to tie the match against Montana and send it to OT. Mariel Gutierrez scored the game-winner in the second overtime, which got the Bears off to a 1-0 start in Big Sky play.
Bear Bites:Â
-Â Â Â UNC starts the weekend with a 5-5 record.
-Â Â Â Despite the three goals by Daley, Gutierrez and Roberts remain the highest scoring players in the league with four goals each, in one fewer match.
-Â Â Â Gutierrez is now tied for first for most game-winning goals this season by a Big Sky player.
-Â Â Â UNC is averaging 1.5 goals per game, tops in the conference.
