Northern Colorado will look to head into the Colorado Cup with confidence
GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado soccer is back at Jackson Stadium this weekend when they host the University of Calgary in an exhibition game on Saturday at 10 am. The Bears have their final tune-up before the regular season begins in one week. This is the first time the two teams have met.
UNC earned a 2-1 victory Denver in its first exhibition game last Saturday, with senior Maddie Roberts and freshman Kalen Niedling scoring goals for the Bears. Junior Jessica Smith started in net and played the first half, allowing one goal with two saves. Freshman Taylor Washington was subbed in for the second half and made two saves, including one on a penalty kick to keep Bears ahead.
Nothern Colorado finished third in the Big Sky Conference last season with a 5-3-2 record and 13-7-2 overall. In the conference tournament, UNC reached the finals but fell to Eastern Washington, who also was the regular season title holder. UNC's success last season helped contribute to them being selected second in the conference preseason poll, behind the first-place Eagles.
The Bears return seven starters and 21 letterwinners from the 2017 team while welcoming 14 freshmen to Greeley. Mariel Gutierrez is among the returners for UNC and is a three-time, All-Big Sky First Team selection. Last season, Gutierrez led the team with nine goals and 24 points, tying for second on the team with six assists. Gutierrez was also second on the team in minutes played with 1,781.

Following the exhibition Saturday, UNC opens the regular season at home next ThursdayAugust 16, at 7 pm against Colorado College in the first game of the annual Colorado Cup. Northern Colorado won its first-ever Colorado Cup last season.
