Northern Colorado baseball was eliminated from the WAC Tournament on Thursday in a 2-0 loss to CSU Bakersfield
MESA, Ariz. – Northern Colorado baseball saw its season end on Thursday afternoon, just missing out on a timely hit as CSU Bakersfield won 2-0. UNC finishes its season at 29-24 overall.
How It Happened
Andrew Penner lined a pitch down the left field line for a double and Luis Martinez doubled to the gap in right-center scoring Penner to make it 1-0 with two outs in the first inning putting CSUB up.
UNC's bats were quiet early on, but the Bears found a way to load the bases in the third. Alex Kiel singled through the left side while Dean Lawson walked and Matt Burkart was hit by a pitch with two outs. Northern Colorado's threat was ended when Jack Pauley's hit down the left field line hung inside the field of play just long enough to be caught for the out.
The game remained 1-0 until the fifth inning when Jake Ortega reached on a two-out walk. He came home to score when a high fly ball was lost in the air and fell in for a double in left center by Noah Barba extending the 'Runners lead to 2-0.
CSUB starter Devante Butler pitched seven scoreless innings before Naithen Dewsnap came into the game in the eighth looking for the save. UNC put a pair on as Miller and Lawson each singled to start the eighth. A well-executed sacrifice bunt by Matt Burkart put the tying run in scoring position. Unfortunately for the Bears, that's where they would stay as the inning ended with a strikeout and groundout.
In the team's final chance, Northern Colorado put a runner on with Evan Johnson reaching on an error and Tyler Yamaguchi extending the game with a two-out single. UNC's season ended on a groundout to second.
