Northern Colorado baseball dropped its opening game at the WAC Tournament 8-3 Wednesday
MESA, Ariz. – A late push by Northern Colorado was not enough in the team's opening game at the Western Athletic Conference Tournament Wednesday afternoon as they fell 8-3 to Seattle. The Redhawks used a five-run first inning to gain separation from the Bears.
How It Happened
Austin Lively tripled to open the day at the plate for Seattle and later came home on a sacrifice fly from Dalton Hurd. UNC looked to get out of the inning allowing just one run, but SU strung together four straight two-out hits capped off by a two-RBI double from Cameron Sterne.
The Redhawks added on another run in the second to make it 6-0 and then road the arm of lefty Tarik Skubal. Seattle's starting pitcher threw six innings allowing one unearned run on four hits while striking out 10 Bears.
Northern Colorado's lone run against Skubal came in the sixth when Austin Miller and Dean Lawson reached on a walk and single up the middle, advancing to second and third on a fielding error by Seattle. Jack Pauley put UNC on the scoreboard with his sacrifice fly to left scoring Miller.
The Bears continued to chip away at the lead with two more runs in the seventh to cut the Seattle lead in half. Evan Johnson led off the inning with a pinch-hit walk. The Redhawk's second fielding error of the day allowed Brett Minnick to reach base and once again put runners on second and third. A balk by SU pitcher Tyler Yeh scored Johnson and then a wild pitch from Yeh brought in Minnick.
Seattle added on a pair of insurance runs in the eighth while the Bears were held scoreless throughout the remainder of the game.
Game Changer
Austin Lively set the tone for Seattle at the plate with his triple down the right field line. He ended up going 3-for-4 on the day with a double and triple. He also drew a walk while scoring once and driving in one run.
Stat to Know
