Northern Colorado battled with New Mexico State, coming up just short against Sunday afternoon
GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado baseball and New Mexico State were locked in a pitcher's duel until the ninth inning when both teams combined to score five runs, as the Aggies took the rubber match 6-3 Saturday afternoon. Both starters, Keenan Lum and Alex Pinedo lasted 7.1 innings in the game.
How it Happened
Similar to Saturday's game, New Mexico State built a lead, but every time the Bears came back. That trend started in the second inning when Lum hit a pair of batters to lead off the inning. A flyout and sacrifice fly brought home one of the two hit batsmen to put NMSU up 1-0.
The Aggies held that 1-0 lead until the third inning. Austin Miller reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to third off a Dean Lawson single and another fielder's choice with Matt Burkart at-bat. Jack Pauley singled to short center field scoring Miller to even the game at one.
Lum and Pinedo proceeded to exchange goose eggs on the scoreboard in the fourth and fifth inning. Like the first time New Mexico State scored in the game, they saw their first two batters reach to begin the sixth inning. Tristian Carranza and Mason Fishback each singled to start the inning and Carranza scored on a sacrifice fly from Nick Gonzales.
The Bears were retired in order in the sixth and seventh but fought back in the eighth to tie the game. Austin Miller began the rally with an infield single. He then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch to move 90 feet from scoring with two outs. Brett Minnick worked a walk before another Pauley single scored Miller once again and head to the ninth tied at two.
Northern Colorado's momentum did not last long, as New Mexico State began the ninth with single and walk. Following a sacrifice bunt, UNC elected to intentionally walk Caleb Henderson to load the bases and put a force out at every base. The strategy backfired when NMSU scored four runs on a walk and pair of singles to lead 6-2 going to the bottom of the ninth.
UNC never said die even though they were down to their final out. Matt Zoba started the rally with a single to left. Tyler Yamaguchi put runners on the corners with a single himself and Austin Miller recorded the third straight single to make it a 6-3 game. The Bears loaded the bases with a Lawson infield single, but the Aggies were able to survive with a pop out to shallow center to end the game.
Game Changer
Keenan Lum was just what the doctor ordered for Northern Colorado after an injury caused the Bears to use its bullpen for the majority of yesterday's game. The Hawaiian pitched 7.1 innings allowing two runs on seven hits. Lum struck out four and walking just one.
Stat to Know
- There were 21 hits in the game, but all of them were singles. The Bears had 12 hits, while NMSU had nine.
Game Notes
- Dean Lawson led the team with three hits, all of them being single.
- After the first two games of the series where walks plagued each team, there were only six total walks in the finale.
- A bit of a statistical anomaly happened on Sunday when the teams combined for eight fielder's choice.
What's Ahead?
Northern Colorado looks to close out its five-game homestand on a high note when Metro State visits Jackson Field on Tuesday. The Bears and Roadrunners are set for a 3 pm first pitch.
