GREELEY, Colo. - The Bears failed to win a set against Air Force Academy Wednesday as they fell 7-0 to the Falcons at UNC Campus Tennis Courts. The Bears (5-14, 1-9 Big Sky) have just two matches remaining in the regular season. They will play Colorado State next on April 19 at 2:30 p.m. in Fort Collins. Then Idaho State visits Greeley to finish the year on April 21 at 10:00 a.m. The match will be held outside if the weather forecast is favorable.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Air Force's No. 1 doubles duo, TJ Fumagalli and Elizabeth Barnickel used an aggressive, come-to-the-net play style to dispatch the Bears Anna Battersby and Tristen Bryant-Otake 6-1 in 27 minutes. At No. 2, Raffa Mora and Madeline Doherty made winning shots from the baseline with some frequency but came up short against Meredith Jones and Ashleigh Harvey 6-3.
In singles, matches played out more quickly than UNC preferred and they quickly found themselves behind in the match 3-0 after TJ Fumagalli and Elizabeth Barnickel combined to only lose three games at No. 1 and No. 2. Matches at the bottom the lineup were more competitive, but still resulted in straight set wins for Air Force.
The final match on court was No. 3 Anna Battersby against Air Force's Meredith Jones. Both players were able to play out long rallies while keeping the ball deep in the court but Jones was able to mix in drop shots effectively and ultimately won the match 6-4, 6-4.
Air Force improved their record to 13-6 overall. They play New Mexico State to finish the year on April 21 in Albuquerque.
