GREELEY, Colo. – The Bears enter their final week of the regular season and finish by playing three matches in four days. UNC will host Air Force on Wednesday, then travel to Colorado State Thursday before ending the spring with a home match against Idaho State on Saturday.
LAST TIME OUT
The Bears lost both road matches last weekend. In a 7-0 loss to Montana, Raffa Mora and Madeline Doherty teamed to win their match at No. 2 doubles. In singles, Mana Koitabashi, Tristen Bryant-Otake, and Sarina Chhabra all played three set matches but lost.
On Saturday, UNC lost to Montana State in Bozeman 5-2. Despite the loss, the Bears played a competitive match and head coach Brenda Gallegos was impressed with the team's level of fight.
"We've been biulding up to this moment all season," Gallegos said after the match. "Better late than never because everyone showed up today. The team exemplified their true passion as competitors by not giving up and fighting hard."
The Bears picked up singles wins at No. 4 (Sarina Chhabra) and No. 5 (Mana Koitabashi). Tristen Bryant-Otake and Madeline Doherty also took their matches to three sets but did not prevail.
SCOUTING THE FALCONS (12-6, 0-4 Conf.)
The Falcons split a pair of matches over the weekend, losing to Utah State 5-2 and beating Weber State 6-1. Both contests were on the road, where the Falcons have gone 3-4 so far this spring.
Similar to UNC, Air Force features a young lineup that features one senior, two juniors, two sophomores, and four freshmen. The top of the Falcon lineup has been extremely successful. Soph. TJ Fumagalli plays No. 1 singles and has a 12-4 record. Last year, Fumagalli was named first team All-Mountain West for doubles and was nationally ranked with No. 2 singles player Elizabeth Barnickel.
Barnickel, a junior is 14-2 in singles and 10-2 with Fumagalli at No. 1 doubles. Air Force head coach Kim Gidley has been at the helm for 19 seasons.
Last year, the Bears were shutout by Air Force 5-0 in Colorado Springs. The Falcons swept doubles and lost just one set in singles to take the match. Anna Battersby and Raffa Mora are the only current Bears that participated in the contest.
SCOUTING THE RAMS (10-10, 1-4 Conf.)
The Rams reached ten wins for the first time since 2007 with their win Sunday afternoon against Air Force. In the match, CSU took the team doubles point, then won at No. 3, No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 singles to take the 5-2 victory. The win helped the Rams break a five-match losing streak as well.
Colorado State has one junior, three sophomores, and three freshman on their roster. Priscilla Palermo is 5-9 at No. 1 singles and nearly defeated Air Force's TJ Fumagalli last weekend, losing 7-6, 7-6.
Most of Colorado State's wins in singles have come at No. 2 and No. 3. Emily Luetschwager is 10-5 when playing the second spot and Alyssa Grijalva is 13-3 at No. 3.
Jarod Comerota took over at head coach last season for the John Messick, who had been coach for the previous 31 years.
Last season, the Bears nearly pulled off an upset of Colorado State, losing 4-3. Anna Battersby and Raffa Mora both grabbed wins in singles at No. 1 and No. 5 respectively but CSU took the team doubles point and that proved to be the difference maker.
SCOUTING THE BENGALS (8-11, 5-4 Big Sky)
The Bengals clinched the final spot in the Big Sky conference tournament last weekend despite a 4-3 loss to Sacramento State on Sunday. In the match, Idaho State won at No. 2 doubles. They also won in singles at No. 2, No. 3, and No. 5 but the effort came up just short.
Idaho State is 4-5 away from home this spring. They are 3-2 over their last five duels. Three different players have been inserted at the No. 1 position, but Hristina Cvetkovic has seen action there most often and has a record of 2-8. Huibre-Mare Botes is 4-4 at No. 2 and Louise-Mare Botes is 8-2 at No. 3.
Overall, the Bengals are 43-47 in all singles matches and 19-22 in doubles. Gretchen Maloney is in her third year as head coach.
