SCOUTING THE COBBERS (9-9, 4-4 Conf.)
The Cobbers played two matches on one day Sunday but dropped both. North Dakota beat Concordia College 7-0 and Augustana won 8-1. The Cobbers' longest win streak this season is three and their longest losing streak is three.
The Concordia College roster features ten players, all from either North Dakota or Minnesota. They have experience as well with four seniors, four sophomores, and two freshmen. Isaac Toivonen is 10-7 at No. 1 singles and Erik Porter is 7-10 at No. 2. In doubles, nine different combinations have been tried with Isaac Toivonen and David Youngs playing mostly No. 1. The pair hold a 7-9 record.
As a team, the Cobbers have been much better in doubles (26-28) than singles (45-63). Their coach, Joseph Murray is in his second season. The Bears have not played the Cobbers in the Division I era.
SCOUTING THE FIGHTING HAWKS (2-12, 1-8 Big Sky)
North Dakota has had a difficult time finding wins this season but have won three of their last five duels including back-to-back shutouts last weekend against Concordia College (Minn.) and Augustana (Minn.).
The Fighting Hawks roster is made up of one senior, three juniors, two sophomores, and four freshmen. Lukas Buth plays No. 1 singles and is 4-7 at that position. Daniel Martinez and Annei Laska have split time at No. 2 and the pair have combined to go 0-14. Overall, the Fighting Hawks have struggled in singles and hold an 18-63 record.
They have been moderately more successful in doubles. At 11-26, Martine and Buth have been the usual pairing to play No. 1. They are 4-6. Last season, the Bears won the matchup 5-2 in Greeley. UNC took No. 1 and No. 2 doubles and won all but two singles spots. Connor Finerty, Kyle Pease, and Cassell King all have wins over UND from last year's contest.
Tom Wynne is in his 27th season as head coach. The Fighting Hawks finished 6-15 overall last year, 2-9 in the Big Sky conference.
ELSEWHERE IN THE BIG SKY
Yannick Schmidl went 6-0 between singles and doubles play as Montana went 3-0 to earn #BigSkyTennis Player of the Week.
Schmidl and Montana started out the week handing Idaho its first league loss. Schmidl and teammate Max Korkh clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 win at No. 2 doubles. In singles play, the senior won 6-4, 7-6 at the top spot as Montana won the match 5-2.
In a pair of 7-0 victories against Northern Colorado and Portland State, Schmidl won 6-3 versus the Bears and 6-2 against the Vikings at No. 2 doubles. The senior from Germany won 6-4, 6-2 against Northern Colorado and 6-1, 7-6 versus Portland State at No. 1 singles to cap off the week.
This is the second Player of the Week honor for Schmidl this season. Montana clinched a spot in the Big Sky Championship with the three wins and will finish the regular season against Montana State and Eastern Washington this weekend.
