GREELEY, Colo. - The Bears fell 4-3 to the University of Nebraska, Omaha in women's tennis Sunday afternoon at Work Out West Fitness Center. The Bears were close to winning the doubles point to gain the early advantage, but Omaha was stronger in singles and three set matches at No. 1 and No. 2 to seal the Bears' fate. The close result was encouraging for the Bears as they reach the mid-way point of the season.
"We made huge improvements in between Friday's match against Eastern Washington and today's match against Omaha," said head coach Brenda Gallegos. "I feel like there is still plenty of room for improvement but we are making steps in the right direction and I am confident we will start to flip the switch."
HOW IT HAPPENED
After Omaha took the team doubles point, they continued their momentum into singles. At No. 1, UNO's Michelle Lo rarely made unforced errors and quickly took the first set against UNC Soph. Raffa Mora. Mora battled back in the second set and led 4-2 but Lo tied it 5-5 and eventually forced a tiebreaker, captured by Mora 9-7. Lo's consistency was too much for Mora to handle in the third set and Mora fell 6-0.
No. 2 singles featured a lot of extended rallies, which included deep lobs by both players on almost every point. Janelle Wilson won most of the long points in the early portion of the first set but Bryant-Otake's patience steadily improved and she grabbed a 4-1 lead in the second to force a decider. In the third, more lobs and long rallies ensued and the style of play was too much for Bryant-Otake to handle in the end.
Anna Battersby lost her first set at No. 3 but was able to grind out enough points to keep it close in the second, losing to Marie Kapelevich 6-1, 6-4.
No. 4 Madeline Doherty played a solid first set against Natalie Lorentz was able to dictate play through much of the match. Doherty led 5-2 and had a chance to serve for the match but closing proved difficult and Lorentz swung it back to 5-5. Again, Doherty served for the match at 6-5 and closed out the match 7-5.
Sarina Chhabra played solid tennis in her match at No. 5 singles for the Bears and went on to win in straight sets 7-5, 7-6(4) with the team result already decided. Mana Koitabashi also played well at No. 6 for the Bears. She came from behind to win a third set-supertiebreaker 4-6, 6-3, 10-2 over Emily Behling.
"I was pleased with our overall energy, attitude and effort today," said Gallegos. "We have some time now to practice and get better in certain areas. We should be ready for our matches on the road coming up against Seattle and Portland State. I was especially pleased today with Mana and Madeline's performance because of their passion and tenacity."
UP NEXT
The Bears (2-7, 0-4 Big Sky) have lost four straight matches but have next weekend off. Then they head to the Pacific Northwest to play Seattle on March 15 and Portland State on March 18. The Mavericks (6-7, 0-0) will move on to play Chicago State on March 9.
