Northern Colorado alum, Marty English returns to UNC as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach
GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado football is bringing back one of its own as Marty English joins the coaching staff as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. English, a 30-year plus veteran of the coaching ranks, joins the staff after spending the past two seasons at Colorado State as its defensive coordinator.
"It is awesome to welcome Marty back to Northern Colorado. He was my contact when I was pursuing this job and a mentor for me," head coach Earnest Collins Jr said. "I have played and coached for Marty and now it will be fun to flip those roles. The last time we coached together, we had a pretty salty defense. I am looking forward to having his mind in the fold on our defense and getting our team better."
This is English's second tenure with Northern Colorado, having started his coaching career at his alma mater as a graduate assistant in 1987 and coaching in Greeley for 16 years including three as the defensive coordinator from 2000-02. English played for the Bears from 1982-85, earning All-North Central Conference honors at linebacker his senior season.
"I am just excited to be back at UNC and to see if we can get everything in place to be successful here. It's a great staff to be around and exciting time to come back here for me," English said. "Earnest and I work well together. We understand each other's thought process and it is a great opportunity to work together again."
English, a second-generation coach, is well known by Colorado high school coaches as one of the most genuine and effective recruiters of in-state talent. On top of coaching at UNC and CSU, English also coached at Wyoming from 2003-11, serving as defensive and special team's coordinator from 2009-11. He has helped develop numerous current and former NFL players including Reed Doughty, Aaron Smith, Shaq Barret and Cory James.
English is the only new face to the UNC coaching staff as of now, but head coach Earnest Collins, Jr shuffled around his coaching staff. Jon Boyer is now the associate head coach to go along with offensive coordinator and quarterback coach duties. Meanwhile, on the offensive side of the ball, Jeremy Hayden moves from running backs coach to tight ends and offensive line assistant. Michael Armour is now the inside receivers coach and Keith Grable the outside receivers coach. Brandon Maguire moves from the defensive side to offense as the new running backs coach.
Garrien Johnson, who served as Quality Control/ Video Coordinator, takes over Maguire's old spot tutoring the defensive ends and Woody Blevins assumes the special team's coordinator role with the departure of Bryan Cummings. One other change on the staff is Kyle Worden, who served as a Defensive Graduate Assistant last season, moving up to full-time video coordinator for the team.

UNC begins its spring football practices on Tuesday morning. The Bears will conduct 15 practices over the next month, culminating with the Spring Game on April 21, at 12:30 pm.
