Bryan Cummings is in his third as special teams coordinator and second as the linebackers coach.
During his first season in charge of the linebacking core, the LBs accumulated 315 of the team's 1008 tackles. Cummings coached the Big Sky Defensive Leader in tackles in Kyle Newsom, who racked up 121 stops on the season, and was a Second Team All-Big Sky honoree.
On special teams in 2016, the Bears blocked one punt for a TD as well as a PAT.
The Net Punt Average has improved from #118 in 2014 when Cummings arrived to #36 after his third season.
In three seasons, zero points have been allowed by any of his special teams coverage units. Â Â
In 2015 under his direction, the special teams was one of the best in the FCS, leading the country in Punt Return Average.
His return specialists Ellis Onic II and Hakeem Deggs also received national recoginition. Onic II, was first and second team All-American according to College Sports Madness and STATS LLC., along with the CFPA Punt Returner of the Year.
Deggs was the Big Sky Conference Special Teams Player of the Year and was on the CFPA watchlist for kick returners.
The special teams was good for four touchdowns, the most the unit has had since joining the Big Sky Conference.
On the recruiting front, Cummings helped bring the No. 25 ranked QB in the class of 2016 in Keaton Mott.Â
His players have combined for five Big Sky All-Conference Honors, including back-to-back Special Teams Player of the Year awards.Â

Cummings comes from Alabama A&M where he was the special teams coordinator and defensive line coach.Â
At Alabama A&M, Cummings improved the Net Punt Average 85 spots, taking it from #100 in 2013 to #15 in 2014.
His special teams finished 13th in the FCS in Punt Return and accumulated two ST touchdowns.
During his stint at Alabama A&M, Cumming mentored All-SWAC DT, Anthony Lanier, who was a Free Agent with the Washington Redskins in 2015.
Prior to his stint with the Bulldogs, Cummings was at Texas A&M where he served as a special teams quality control assistant.Â
Cummings mentored Heisman Trophy winner, Johnny Manziel and coached in the 2012 Cotton Bowl, as well as the 2013 Chick-Fil-A Bowl. The Aggies boasted a 20-6 overall record in his two seasons at A&M.
Cummings also has experience at the high school level, serving as an assistant coach at New Bern High School in New Bern, N.C., working with the team’s linebackers. He also coordinated the strength and conditioning program.
During the 2008 season, he served as an assistant at Canisius High School in Buffalo, N.Y.
He got his start at the University of Buffalo in 2006 as a Defensive Intern/Student Assistant. He helped coach James
