GREELEY, Colo. -The Bears were defeated in men's tennis 5-2 against the Sacramento State Hornets Friday afternoon in Greeley. Northern Colorado barely missed earning the team doubles point in the early going but lost in hard fought matches. The team then received singles wins from Tommy Smalley and Kyle Pease but it ended up to be too little too late.
UNC took the early lead in doubles as Kyle Pease and Tommy Smalley teamed up to defeat Dom Miller and Donald Hall 6-2 and was the first off the court. No. 1 doubles stayed on serve all the way to the tiebreak, which saw Mikus Losburgs and Kasparas Zemaitelis prevail 7-4. With everyone watching No. 2, Sacramento State earned a break of serve late in the set to win 7-5 and give the Hornets a 1-0 lead in the match.
In singles, Connor Finerty had his work cut out for him at the No. 1 slot. Sacramento State's Mikus Losbergs effectively used a piercing low slice and big serve to great advantage and won in straight sets despite a late charge in the second from Finerty.
Kyle Pease was a winner at No. 2 singles. He bested Dom Miller, avenging a third-set tiebreaker loss against Miller last season in the same position.
Nick Wade, Michael Kritzinger, and Alex Exsted all fell in straight sets but No. 5 Tommy Smalley went the distance as the last match on court. He split sets with So. Louis Chabut to force a ten-point tiebreaker. He closed out the match with a groundstroke deep in the court, forcing Chabut to make an error.
The Bears (4-2, 0-1) resume their homestand on Saturday when they play Utah at 7:00 pm at Work Out West. The Hornets (1-4, 1-1) return home to play Nevada on Feb. 11.
