Work Out West Fitness Center, Greeley, Colo.
GREELEY, Colo. - The Bears (4-1, 0-0 Conf.) will look to continue a strong start to their season when they take on Sacramento State and the University of Utah this weekend in Greeley. The two matches are the middle portion of a six-match homestand for UNC. So far this spring, the Bears are 3-0 when playing at Work Out West Fitness Center and hope the trend continues against a pair of difficult opponents.
LAST TIME OUT
Last weekend, the Bears defeated in state rivals Metropolitan State 5-2 and Colorado College 6-1. Against the Roadrunners, the Bears swept doubles competition and received singles wins from No. 1 Connor Finerty, No. 3 Nick Wade, No. 5 Tommy Smalley, and No. 6 Alex Exsted. Finerty handed Metro State Soph. Josh Graetz his first singles loss of the season, winning in three sets 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.
The Bears carried the momentum into Sunday's match against Colorado College. They were able to win two of three doubles matches and five of six singles matches despite being without the services of No. 2 singles player, Kyle Pease.
SCOUTING THE HORNETS (0-4, 0-1 Conf.)
The Hornets are still looking for their first win of spring but have been up against a difficult early schedule. They have 4-3 losses to St. Mary's and North Dakota and lost to perennial contenders Minnesota and Cal Poly 7-0.
In 2017, Sacramento State defeated UNC 7-0 in the first match of the UC-Davis tournament. However, Connor Finerty and Kyle Pease played No. 2 doubles in that match and came out victorious 6-3.
Jr. Mikus Losburgs returned to play No. 1 singles this season and is currently 0-4 at that position. Jr. Dom Miller is back as well to play No. 2 for the Hornets. Miller narrowly defeated Kyle Pease last season 10-6 in a third set super-tiebreaker.
Last season, the Hornets lost seven matches in a row to start the season but rebounded to win 11 of their last 19 to finish the year. They will likely be looking for similar results in 2018.
SCOUTING THE UTES (7-1, 0-0 Conf.)
The Utes will be one of the toughest opponents the Bears play in 2018. Utah has wins this spring against Montana State (7-0), Weber State (5-2), Utah State (4-3), Idaho State (7-0), Wichita State (5-2), Pacific (7-0), and Northern Arizona (7-0).
Utah plays two matches on Feb. 11, first Denver at 10:00 a.m. and then UNC in Greeley at 6:00 p.m.
The Bears last played Utah on Feb. 14, 2015. Utah, ranked #54 nationally at the time won easily 7-0.
Utah features a balanced roster consisting of two seniors, two juniors, two sophomores, and three freshmen. They finished sixth in the PAC 12 Conference last season with a record of 17-10.
Head Coach Roeland Brateanu returns for his fourth season and is the reigning ITA Mountain Region Coach of the Year.
