@UNCO_MensTennis Bests Colorado College for Second Win of the Weekend

GREELEY, Colo.- Northern Colorado defeated Colorado College 6-1 on Sunday, thanks to strong play in both singles and doubles. The Bears won two of three doubles matches and No. 4 Tommy Smalley made quick work of Brian Chen, winning 6-0, 6-0 to give the Bears a commanding lead in the contest. Connor Finerty was able to best Soph. Noah Forman in straight sets at No. 1 as well.
The Bears won both matches on the weekend, having defeated Metropolitan State on Saturday. The Bears (4-1, 0-0) begin conference play next week when they play Sacramento State on Feb. 9. It will be the third of a six-match homestand for UNC. Fans can watch the Bears for free at Work Out West Fitness Center at 11:00 a.m. Colorado College (0-5, 0-0) will play Claremont-Mudd Scripts next on Feb. 16.

DOUBLES BREAKDOWN:
Alex Exsted and Ryan Hardin jumped out to a quick break of serve in their match at No. 3. They led 4-1 and comfortably took the set. At No. 1 Connor Finerty and Cassell King got off to a slower start but found their stride at the 2-2 mark and soon were cruising. They cut down on unforced errors and put away volleys with much more frequency. Finerty held serve easily at 5-2 including a pair of aces to close it out.
With the team doubles point decided, a close match at No. 2 doubles for the Bears' Michael Kritzinger and Nick Wade. UNC was up a break at 3-2 but Colorado College came back to lead 5-4 and serve out the set.
SINGLES BREAKDOWN:
Tommy Smalley systematically dismantled his opponent, Brian Chen at No. 4 singles for the Bears. He did not lose a single game in the match. Nick Wade, Michael Kritzinger, and Alex Exsted followed with straight set victories, leaving only Cassell King still on court.
King entered into a ten-point tiebreaker for the third set. His opponent, Fr. Alex Kley was able to come up with a backhand passing shot up the line when he was down match point and it was that shot that seemed to turn the momentum in his favor. Kyle Pease was absent at No. 2 for the Bears, leaving all players under Finerty at No. 1 to play up a spot from their normal lineup position.

A drop shot-volley winner at 5-3, 40-Love gave hime the set.
In the second Finerty kept his unforced errors to a minimum and he continued to be the more patient player. He earned a pair of early breaks to lead 5-1 and served out the match for a 6-3, 6-2 win.
