UNC Swept Doubles, Received Four More Wins in Singles
GREELEY, Colo.- The Bears swept doubles play and went on to defeat Metropolitan State 5-2 in men's tennis Saturday afternoon at Work Out West Fitness Center. UNC also picked up wins in singles from No. 1 Connor Finerty, No. 3 Nick Wade, No. 5 Tommy Smalley, and No. 6 Alex Exsted.
In doubles, Northern Colorado quickly took the team point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Winning at No. 1 proved a more difficult task. The set stayed on serve for the all the way through to 6-6, necessitating a tiebreaker. The experienced UNC pairing of Connor Finerty and Cassell King were down 4-1, then were able to come back thanks to strong serving as they won 7-5.
In singles, No. 4 Michael Kritzinger was first off the court as he dispatched Fr. Daniel Lloerente in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. Soon after, Nick Wade gave the Bears a 3-0 lead with a win over Soph. Alejandro Martinez-Morilla 7-6(2), 6-2.
Connor Finerty sealed the team victory with his win at No. 1 over Josh Graetz. Graetz, a senior, had been 4-0 in singles coming into Saturday contest. Finerty lost the first set 6-3 and came back to win sets two and three 6-3, 7-5 respectively.
The Bears (3-1, 0-0) will continue their six-match homestand when they welcome Colorado College on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. at Work Out West Fitness Center. It is the final match before conference play begins on Feb. 9. Metro State (2-5, 0-0) plays Eastern Washington next on Feb. 16.
