GREELEY, Colo. -After splitting a pair of matches over the weekend in Colorado Springs, the Bears (2-1, 0-0 Conf.) return home this weekend to play in state foes Metropolitan State and Colorado College. The matches take place on Saturday and Sunday and begin a six-match homestand for the team. The Bears will have a busy February, playing a total of ten matches.
LAST TIME OUT
The Bears were blanked at Air Force Academy Friday 7-0 but the final score was not necessarily representative of how the match progressed. After Air Force swept doubles, the Bears nearly pulled out a trio of three set matches beginning with Nick Wade at No. 3, who lost to Paul Hendrix 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. At No. 4, Michael Kritzinger narrowly lost to Tadhg Collins 6-2, 4-6, 7-5. Then Alex Exted was defeated at No. 6 by Matthew Ghering 4-6, 6-2, 1-0.
UNC rebounded to win against the University of Incarnate Word on Saturday 5-2. It was the first time in school history the Cardinals and Bears met. Incarnate Word won two of three doubles matches for a 1-0 lead. Then No. 1 singles player Connor Finerty grabbed a win for UNC over Sebastian Mortier after dropping the first set 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Kyle Pease also won in three sets at No. 2, as did Michael Kritzinger at No. 4. Tommy Smalley was a straight set winner for the Bears at No. 5.
SCOUTING THE ROADRUNNERS
The Bears will be Metro State's first opponent of the spring after their Jan. 28 scheduled match against Air Force was postponed. In the fall, the Roadrunners picked up wins over Colorado Mesa 5-4 and Emporia State 6-3.
In 2016-17, Metro State posted a 13-8 record ending the season on a five-match win streak en route to capturing the RMAC conference tournament. This year, they have a mix of experience and fresh faces including 2 seniors, 3 juniors, 1 sophomore, and 2 freshmen.
Josh Graetz plays No. 1 singles and has not been beaten at that position this season (4-0). He is also the only player on the team to hold a winning record in singles competition. Graetz pairs with Joey Tcherne at No. 1 doubles and they are 2-2.
Northern Colorado leads the all-time head to head advantage in the series at 21-19. In Greeley, the Bears are 14-11 against the Roadrunners and the Bears have not travelled to Denver to play Metro State since 2002.
SCOUTING COLORADO COLLEGE
Colorado College will play their first match of the spring season against UNC. They are still searching for their first win after fall losses to Colorado Mesa 1-8, CSU-Pueblo (x2) 0-5, and Texas Permian-Basin 0-9.
The Tiger's roster is made up of 1 senior, 2 juniors, 4 sophomores, and 3 freshmen. Last season the Bears won the matchup 7-0 in Greeley. However, Noah Forman pushed Connor Finerty to a third set super-tiebreak in his freshman season and is back in 2018. Forman went 7-9 at No. 1 last season.
