THE SCHEDULE
Spring Match 6

vs. Idaho (0-2, 0-0 Conf.)
Work Out West Fitness Center, Greeley, Colo.
GREELEY, Colo. - The Bears (2-3, 0-1) continue their homestand this weekend with a match against the Idaho Vandals at Work Out West Fitness Center. Fr. Tristen Bryant-Otake has been playing well at No. 2 singles for the Bears and she currently holds a 3-2 record. The rest of the singles lineup is made up of No. 1 Raffa Mora, No. 3 Madeline Doherty, No. 4 Sarina Chhabra, No. 5 Carrigan Blanchard, and No. 6 Mana Koitabashi. UNC features a young team that will be looking to string together wins. The match against Big Sky opponent Idaho is an opportunity to start building momentum toward the middle of the schedule.
LAST TIME OUT
The Bears split a pair of matches last weekend. On Saturday, they got past Metropolitan State 6-1 before losing on Sunday to Sacramento State by the same score. Against the Hornets. Tristen Bryant-Otake was the lone winner in singles for the Bears. She defeated Sofi Wicker after losing the first set 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Sarina Chhabra and Madeline Doherty were also ahead 5-4 at No. 2 doubles when the team doubles point was decided by Sacramento State. Anna Battersby was inserted into the doubles lineup again by Head Coach Brenda Gallegos but has yet to make an appearance in singles due to injury.
SCOUTING THE VANDALS (0-2, 0-0 Conf.)
Idaho began their spring schedule against a pair of difficult opponents. On Jan. 20, they fell to Washington State 7-0 on the road. On Feb. 10, the Vandals lost to Gonzaga 6-1 in Spokane, Wash.
Idaho's lone win against Gonzaga came in a tightly contested match on the No. 1 court. Marianna Petrei, ranked No. 42 in the latest ITA rankings, won the first set 7-6(9) over Gonzaga's No. 1 Sophie Whittle. Whittle evened the match with a 7-6(4) win in the second. Petrei picked up the point with a 10-7 win in the super tiebreak, played in lieu of a third set.
The Vandals roster includes two freshmen, two sophomores, two juniors, and one senior. After Petrei at No. 1, Idaho second year head coach Babar Akbar has been going with Maria Tavares at No. 2, Lucia Badillos at No. 3, Laura Spaturo at No. 4, and a three player rotation in the final two singles spots.
There are zero players originally from the United States on Idaho's roster. Countries represented include Spain, Taiwan, Portugal, Italy, and Australia.
HISTORY AGAINST IDAHO
The Bears lost to Idaho last season 7-0 in Pullman, Wash. The Vandals ended 2016-17 with a 16-8 regular season record, 10-1 in conference duels. They defeated Montana State and Northern Arizona to earn a berth to the NCAA Tournament, where they lost to No. 7 Stanford 4-0. The last UNC player to win a singles match against Idaho was Beth Coton in 2016 at No. 2.
BIG PICTURE
The Bears are in the midst of playing 7 of 8 matches in Greeley. So far this spring, they are 2-2 at home and 0-1 on the road. After Idaho, the Bears do not play again until Mar. 2 against Eastern Washington. Then they finish the weekend with non-conference opponent Nebraska Omaha. Last season, UNC finished 8-13, 5-6 in the Big Sky. In the conference tournament, the Bears were seeded fifth and lost in their first round match to Idaho State.
