UNC Swept Doubles but Could Not Win in Singles
GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado fell 6-1 to the University of Idaho in women's tennis Sunday afternoon at Work Out West Fitness Center. The Bears had the early advantage in doubles but were overwhelmed in singles leading to a less than desirable match result.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In doubles, the Bears won narrowly at all three positions. Carrigan Blanchard and Anna Battersby were first off the court at No. 3, winning 6-4. Next, it was Madeline Doherty and Sarina Chhabra at No. 2 with a 7-5 set. The No. 1 doubles duo of Rafa Mora and Tristen Bryant-Otake required a tiebreaker to win their set. After being down 3-0, they won five straight points to take the lead and won 7-4.
Later in singles, the Bears struggled to find traction against the Vandals. This was especially true at No. 1 where Idaho's Marianna Petrei controlled almost every point against Rafa Mora. Mora fell 6-1, 6-0 with Petrei showing why she has been one of the best singles players in the Big Sky Conference.
At No. 2, Tristen Bryant-Otake played a competitive match against Maria Tavares. Both sets featured a large number of long, baseline rallies, but Tavares was slightly more consistent and she got past Bryant-Otake in straight sets.
UP NEXT
The Bears (2-4, 0-2 Conf.) play their next match on March 2 against Eastern Washington. They went 1-2 in the month of February. The Vandals (2-2, 2-0 Conf.) move on to play Oregon on the road on Feb. 25.
