GREELEY, Colo. - Northern Colorado women's tennis fell to Sacramento State 6-1 at Work Out West Fitness Center Sunday morning. Tristen Bryant-Otake was victorious in a three set thriller at No. 2 single, but the Bears failed to secure any more wins in singles in their first Big Sky Conference duel of the season.
Bryan-Otake's match at No. 2 featured a large number of extended baseline rallies. After losing the first set, Bryant-Otake seemed energized and began to climb back into the match. In the third set, she was able to outlast Sofi Wicker, hitting the winning shot up the line for a 6-4 final set.
At No. 1 singles, Sacramento State junior Ana Loaiza Esquivias showed a high level of consistency and came up with deep baseline shots throughout the match to defeat the Bears' Rafa Mora. Wicker was named an All-Big Sky honorable mention last season.
Madeline Doherty and Sarina Chhabra lost at No. 3 and No. 4 respectively, followed by losses at No. 5 and No. 6 by Carrigan Blanchard and Mana Koitabashi.
In doubles the Hornets took No. 1 and No. 3 to secure the team point, but the Bears won at No. 2 with the duo of Madeline Doherty and Sarina Chhabra.
UNC split duel matches over the weekend with a win over Metro State 6-1 on Saturday. It also puts them 1-1 so far on their five-match homestand. The Bears (2-3, 0-1 Big Sky) play just a single match next weekend on February 18 against Eastern Washington at 1:00 p.m. They then host Nebraska-Omaha on March 3.
