Riding a Winning Streak, @UNCBearsVB Travels to Face the Bengals and Wildcats

Northern Colorado will take its first road trip in over a month
Northern Colorado volleyball will travel this weekend for its the first Big Sky road trip of the year. UNC (7-6, 3-1) will face Idaho State on Friday at 7 p.m. and Weber State the following day at 7 p.m.
The Bears went 3-1 during the team's extended home stand, sweeping their last three matches against Big Sky opponents. Recently, UNC earned victories over Montana and Montana State this past week, giving UNC its first three-set, sweep streak since the 2014 Big Sky Championship.
Taylor Els was named Co-Defensive Player of the Week by the Big Sky conference, marking her first career weekly award. Els recorded 6.00 digs per set in the six sets played this past week, including a match-high 20 against Montana. With Els organizing the team's defense, UNC held the Grizzlies to a .096 attack percentage and the Bobcats to a .186 percentage. Els is currently second in the Big Sky with 5.25 digs per set and is averaging 6.08 digs in conference play.

The Bears are allowing opponents to hit only .181 in matches, ranking second in the Big Sky.

UNC's offense continues to be a force, as the team leads the Big Sky in kills per set (13.55), attacks per set (37.84), and assists (12.89).
The offense for the Bears runs through sophomore setter Daisy Schultz, who leads the conference with 11.24 assists per set. Schultz put together two strong passing games last week, recording 40 assists against Montana and 42 against Montana State, while also posting a season-best four kills against the Bobcats.

Lauren Hinrichs has maintained her efficiency at the net during conference play, holding a .402 attack percentage through the first four Big Sky matches. Hinrichs ranks second in the conference with a 0.378 attack percentage overall this season.

Scouting the Bengals
Idaho State finished its non-conference schedule with a 6-7 record, but has started Big Sky play strong with a 4-1 record. The Bengals won the first four conference matches, including a 3-1 win over in-state rival Idaho. In the most recent match, Idaho State dropped a 3-1 match to Weber State on Tuesday night.

Senior outside hitter, Abby Garrity, is the top scorer for the Bengals, leading the Big Sky with 3.89 kills per set, including a season high 21 in the win over Northern Arizona. Garrity is also second on the team with 2.12 digs per set. At the net, red-shirt junior middle blocker Booke Pehrson leads the conference with 1.40 blocks per set and 1.68 in conference matches. Pehrson has won the third Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week award this season. Junior libero Haylie Keck was named Co-Defensive Player of the Week with UNC's Taylor Els this past week. Keck leads the team and is third in the conference with 5.42 digs per set.

UNC was swept by the Bengals in the team's only match last year, which was played in Greeley. Alex Kloehn led the Bears with 15 kills in the loss.

Weber State went 5-4 during its non-conference schedule and has opened Big Sky play with a 4-1 record. The Wildcats are riding a three-match win streak after beating preseason No. 1 Idaho and recently beat Idaho State to move into a tie for first place with them in the Big Sky standings.
Senior outside hitter Andrea Hale leads the team and is fourth in the conference with 3.67 kills per set, while hitting .179. Junior middle blocker Hannah Hill-DeYoung protects the net for the Wildcats, with a team best 1.31 blocks per set that also ranks second in the Big Sky. Hill-DeYoung leads the conference in hitting percentage with a staggering .464 average, while adding 1.96 kills per set. Sophomore setter Ashlyn Power has been strong in the passing game for Weber State, recording 11.06 assists per set, good for third in the Big Sky.
Northern Colorado dropped a 3-1 home match against the Wildcats during the only meeting in the 2017 season. The match was a competitive contest, with Kortney Lockey leading the Bears with 18 kills.
