Northern Colorado was swept by Idaho State on Friday night
POCATELLO, ID – Northern Colorado volleyball's winning streak came to an end on Friday night, as Idaho State swept the Bears [22-25, 16-25, 22-25}. The Bengals were able to limit UNC's offense to a .121 attack percentage.
"We weren't ourselves tonight. We backed down from too many situations at the service line and attacking wise," said head coach Lyndsey Oates. "We were way to passive and when you're playing a good team, that is not going to work."
Errors were an issue for UNC, as the team had 36 combined, including 18 attack errors. The Bears had eight service errors to four service aces.
After three balanced offensive matches, Kortney Lockey was the only UNC player with double-digit kills, finishing with 10 and a .114 attack percentage.
UNC and ISU went back-and-fourth in the first set, with each team holding the lead. After leading early, UNC fell behind the Bengals 15-12. The Bears would respond and go on a 5-0 run to take back control in the set, highlighted Lauren Hinrichs and Daisy Schultz combining for a block. Brittany Lawrence would get a kill to take a 19-17 lead, but ISU was not out of the set. The Bengals went on a 6-0 run with a pair of kills from Abby Garrity. ISU went on to win the set 25-22 and had a 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second set, ISU raced out to a 9-2 lead over UNC and did not look back. The Bengals hit .314 in the set, scoring 14 kills on the way to a 25-16 win and a 2-0 advantage in the match.
The third set played similar to the first set, as both teams traded kills as UNC was holding nothing back as they tried to extend the match. Kailey Jo Ince tallied three kills to drive the Bears offense early on in the set. With the Bears down 7-5, Lockey elevated her offense with two kills to give UNC the lead at 9-8. After exchanging points again, UNC built a 19-15 advantage on three Bengal errors. UNC would then struggle with errors and ISU got back into the set. After tying at 22, ISU took the lead and held on to win the set 25-23, finishing the sweep of the Bears.
Garrity led the Bengals and had a match-high 14 kills, while hitting .419 with only one error. Idaho State moves into sole possession of first place in the conference with a 5-1 record.
UNC record now stands at 3-2 in conference matches and 7-7 overall. "We will continue to get better and be at our best when we are battle tested, Oates added. "We need to see more of the moments in practice and matches when our backs are against the wall. We need to be aggressive to get out of those situations."
