BOULDER- Colo. The Bears won their second straight match in the Colorado Cup and earned a chance to win the title on Thursday, having defeated the Air Force Falcons 2-0 on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Northern Colorado wasted little time, scoring 6 minutes and 5 seconds into the contest to take a 1-0 lead. Sr. Brooke Braden took a shot from inside the box to the right of the keeper through traffic after an assisting pass by Sr. Erica Estes. The goal was Braden's second of the season in as many matches. Ten minutes later (16:26), Jr. Maddie Roberts scored the Bears second goal after a crossing pass from the left wing by Jr. Mariel Gutierrez. It was Roberts' first goal of the season.
Â
The score remained 2-0 the rest of the way. Air Force recorded 4 shots on goal but senior goalkeeper Madeline Burdick was there to make the saves. Northern Colorado had three shots on goal and had 5 corners while the Falcons had 4 corners. Neither team had a yellow or red card issued.
"Really good team effort today from our team today.  We were able to score a couple of early goals to make Air Force chase the game from there. Overall it was a great weekend for us. We were able to use a lot of different players and we got really good pressure up front starting with Mariel Gutierrez, (Brooke) Braden, and Maddie Roberts. Then Jacqui Pulley did a really good job along in the midfield along with the others and Anika Shelrud, a sophomore had a really strong effort. We are looking forward to playing Colorado State for a chance to win the Colorado Cup on Thursday." -Head Coach Tim Barrerra
Â
The next scheduled match for Northern Colorado (2-0-0) is scheduled for Thursday, August 24th, 2017. It is the Bears' home opener at Jackson Stadium in Greeley and will be the third and final match of the Colorado Cup. Start time is 7:00pm versus Colorado State University. It will begin a five match homestand for the Bears.
