4/8/2017 12:44:00 PM | Men's Tennis
GREELEY, Colo.- The University of Northern Colorado defeated Colorado College in men's tennis 7-0 Saturday at Butler Hancock Tennis Courts. In doubles, all three UNC teams jumped out to early 3-0 leads. Number two doubles for Northern Colorado (Alex Vakouftsis and Hayden Cramer) played aggressive tennis, coming into the net and finishing off volleys in a heavy majority of points. They finished off the set 6-1 in just 21 minutes. Less than a minute later Connor Finerty and Kyle Pease capped of their own 6-1 set and Cassell King and Alex Clerihew did the same, winning by the same score as the first two.
Leading the match 1-0, the Bears carried the momentum into singles competition. Agustin Lombardi came out firing with his forehand, wrapping up the first set in just 24 minutes. He only surrendered a game in the second and was the first match to finish, giving the Bears a 2-0 lead. Kyle Pease followed with a straight set win at No. 2, winning points from the baseline routinely. Alex Vakouftsis clinched the team victory for the Bears, winning 6-2, 6-2, at No. 3.
Hayden Cramer was less than impressed with his play early in the first set at No. 4, but won the set in a tiebreaker 7-2 anyway. Cramer then found his stride and rolled to victory in the second, taking the match 7-6(2), 6-2. Alex Clerihew got the start at No. 6 singles and played consistent tennis from the baseline en route to a straight set win 6-2, 6-4. Finally, with the match decided and sets split at No. 1 singles, Connor Finerty won a ten-point tiebreaker 10-7 to give the Bears the shutout win.
With the team victory today, the Bears complete the sweep of a pair of matches this weekend at home and improve their season record to 8-12 (3-7 Big Sky) as they head into their final match next week. That match is scheduled for April 16th at 10:00 am against Northern Arizona, who leads the Big Sky Conference in Greeley. The loss for Colorado College drops its record to 5-9 on the year.
