UNC men's tennis ended the 2017 season with a 5-2 loss to NAU
GREELEY -- Northern Colorado's men's tennis team closed out its 2017 season Sunday by hosting Northern Arizona. The Lumberjacks beat the Bears 5-2 in the season finale. The match also marked the final college matches for Hayden Cramer, Alex Vakouftsis and Alex Clerihew.
In doubles play, Cramer and Vakouftsis teamed up at the No. 2 spot facing Sebastian Eguez and Schumann. The seniors fell in a hard fought 6-4 match. Meanwhile, Clerihew played in the No. 3 doubles position with teammate Agustin Lombardi. They fell in a closely contested match by the score of 7-5, meaning NAU would earn the team doubles point to take the 1-0 lead.
The three Bears seniors also played during the singles matches. Vakouftsis at No. 3, Cramer at No. 4 and Clerihew at No. 6. Vakouftsis was the lone to win his match, going three sets against Felix Schumann of Northern Arizona. It was a comeback effort for Vakouftsis after dropping the first set by the score of 6-3. He forced a third set by the same score of 6-3, and then took the final set by the same exact score.
For Cramer and Clerihew, each fell in straight sets. Cramer 6-4, 6-1 to Ruben Montano and Clerihew to Thomas Fisher 6-2, 6-1. The other UNC win in singles matches came at the No. 2 spot from freshman Kyle Pease. He took down Sebastian Eguez 5-7, 6-2, 10-4.
Northern Colorado finishes its 2017 season with an 8-13 record and 3-8 Big Sky record under interim head coach Ben Gendron, both better marks than the previous season.
