@UNCO_MensTennis to Finish Season with Match Sunday

GREELEY, Colo. – The University of Northern Colorado men's tennis team will finish its regular season at home on Sunday, taking on Big Sky Conference leading Northern Arizona at 10:00 am. Although their conference record will unlikely earn them a bid to the conference tournament, the Bears did show modest improvement overall, compared to last season. A win versus Northern Arizona would give them three more victories than last year.
At No. 6 singles, Agustin Lombardi has been playing his best tennis of the year as of late, beating Colorado College 6-1, 6-1 and Metro State 6-1, 7-5 in his last two matches and Connor Finerty has continued to hold down the No. 1 singles position. He is 7-9 from the top spot this year. Alex Vakouftsis has been a rock at No. 3 and is the only Bears player with a winning record in singles at 10-9.
Men's Tennis (8-12, 3-7 Big Sky)
Last Time Out: The Bears defeated Colorado College in men's tennis 7-0 Saturday at Butler Hancock Tennis Courts, starting strong in doubles by winning all three spots. In singles, they picked up straight set wins at all positions except No. 1. There, Connor Finerty was able to win in a third set super-tiebreaker 4-6, 6-3, 10-7. UNC also defeated Metro State a day earlier by a score of 5-2.
Need to Know: To defeat Northern Arizona, the Bears will have to flip some singles positions in their favor, as UNC only won at No. 4 last season. The good news is that Connor Finerty was the player that beat NAU in that match. The Bears also took care of business in doubles, winning two out of three matches. Knocking off the potential Big Sky champions will not be easy, but given their past record, it is not impossible.
Good to Know: Cassell King and Kyle Pease played No. 2 doubles for most of the spring, but head coach Ben Gendron has switched things up lately, favoring Finerty and Kyle Pease at No. 1 while keeping Hayden Cramer and Alex Vakouftsis together at No. 2. There has been a carousel of combinations at No. 3 doubles and Gendron has used seven different pairs at that position this spring.
Scouting Northern Arizona (13-7, 8-1 Big Sky): The Lumberjacks are undefeated at home (7-0) but are just 5-7 on the road this spring. They are coming off a pair of 7-0 victories over Eastern Washington and Portland State last weekend. Their last loss came against Sacramento State on April 2nd, 6-1. The Lumberjacks' No. 2 doubles team has been chopping down their opponents routinely and will be a difficult matchup for UNC. Sophomore's Tim Handel and Ruben Montano are undefeated at 9-0 at No. 2. Handel also anchors the NAU singles lineup. He has played every match this season at No. 1 and has compiled a record of 14-6.
