GREELEY, Colo. – UNC Men's Tennis is preparing to finish out their regular season with a three-match homestand starting with a pair of matches this weekend. On Friday, April 7th, they will play Metro State at 10:00am. Following on Sunday, April 8th, the Bears will face Colorado College at 2:00pm. The team will be looking to snap an eight match losing streak, six of the losses coming against Big Sky opponents.
Men's Tennis (6-12, 3-7 Big Sky)
Last Time Out: The Bears lost a pair of matches last weekend in the Pacific Northwest. On Saturday they lost a 6-1 decision to Idaho. Kyle Pease earned the lone win in that match at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-2 over Idaho's Carlos Longhi Neto. Then the Bears lost 5-2 to Eastern Washington. Kyle Pease played well in that match also, winning in doubles with Connor Finerty 6-4 and then in singles at No. 2 1-6, 6-4, 10-8. Cassell King also picked up a win in straight sets at No. 6 singles, 7-6(7), 6-3 against Eastern Washington's Vuk Vuckovic.
Need to Know: Connor Finerty continues to lead the Bears, playing No. 1 singles in Coach Ben Gendron's lineup. He holds a 5-9 record at that spot. Despite the tough stretch of recent matches, Cassell King and Kyle Pease still hold a winning record in doubles, at 7-5. They have played mostly No. 2 but are also 2-1 at No. 1 doubles. Closing the season with three matches at home should be a positive for the team who are 6-3 in Greeley.
Scouting Metro State (8-6, 3-1 Conf.): Metro State has had a good year in men's tennis. They are coming off a 5-1 win last weekend versus Sonoma State and also have wins against St. Edwards, Southern Utah, Colorado Mesa, and CSU-Pueblo. The Roadrunners are made up of three seniors, three juniors, two sophomores, and one freshman. Josh Graetz plays No. 1 singles and has a 9-4 record this spring. He also beat UNC's Connor Finerty 6-3, 6-2 in the Metro State Invite in September. Metro State also has a solid No. 1 doubles duo of Josh Graetz and Joey Tscherne who are 14-4. As a team, Metro State is 32-22 in doubles (.593).
Scouting Colorado College (5-8, 0-0 conf.): The Tigers are coming off a close 5-4 win against Sonoma State. Despite losing the team doubles point, Colorado College was strong in singles, picking up wins at No. 1, 3, 5, and 5. The bottom of the Tigers' singles lineup has been stronger this season, and Freshman Kevin Barry is 8-2 playing between 4 and 6 this spring. They have wins over Midland, Colorado Christian, Willamette, and the University of Puget Sound this spring.
Worthless Stat: Last season, the Bears got past Colorado College 7-0. They also beat Metro State 6-1.
