GREELEY, Colo.- Northern Colorado women's tennis lost a close battle to in-state rival Colorado State University Thursday afternoon in Greeley by a 4-3 score. Because of impending weather, the singles matches were played first and UNC got off to a strong start with Beth Coton getting the win at No. 3 against Riley Reeves 6-1, 6-3. The Bears also got singles wins from No. 5 Rafa Mora versus Celine Voss 6-1, 6-2 and Anna Battersby at No. 1, who was able to sneak past Emily Kolbow in three sets 6-2, 7-6(4), 6-2.
With the match tied heading into doubles, Colorado State was able to pick up the deciding team point, winning at No. 2 with Reeves and Voss against Marissa Baca and Anna Battersby 6-1. Then Sandra Keta and Madison Porter took down UNC's Rafa Mora and Lily-Ana Kreutzer 6-1.
Colorado State was heavily favored to win the match on paper but the close result showed the Bears' ability to fight hard and play well against a difficult opponent.
"We had a great match today against Colorado State," said Bears Head Coach Brenda Gallegos after the match. "We decided to play the singles first due to impending rain. We were able to finish all the singles matches tied at 3-3. Fortunately the rain hadn't come yet so we were able to play the doubles to decide the match. Unfortunately we did not come out with the W today but the team competed well. I was proud of the overall effort and attitude today. I really felt like the majority of the players were in a good spot mentally and definitely wanted to pull out the win."
The Bears conclude their regular season schedule on Saturday against Oral Roberts at 10:00am, which will also highlight the graduating seniors on the team. With the loss, UNC's season record drops to 8-11 (5-6 Big Sky) and Colorado State improves to 9-12 (0-5 Conf.).
