GREELEY, Colo.- The Northern Colorado women's tennis team finished its regular season with a strong effort on Saturday, but were unable to best Oral Roberts as they lost 5-2 in a match that took over four hours to complete.
With No. 2 and No. 3 split, the team doubles point came down to No. 1, which remained on serve through most of the set. A costly double fault by Beth Coton set up match point for Oral Roberts and they were able to capitalize for the first break of the set to win 7-5.
The Bears evened the score in singles when Anna Battersby wrapped up a straight set win at No. 1. Battersby continually peppered high topspin shots deep in the court to force errors from her opponent, Ceijenia Cornelius. Battersby used her inside-out forehand to a great degree of effectiveness throughout the match, winning the match 6-0, 6-3.
Marissa Baca won the first set quickly over Petya Simeonova at the No. 4 singles, but was unable to close the second despite grabbing a 5-2 lead. The comeback momentum for Simeonova continued in the deciding set and Oral Roberts was able to close it out 0-6, 7-5, 6-4, for a 2-1 team lead.
Beth Coton finished her distinguished career for UNC with a win over Jovana Antonijevic at No. 3 singles 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(5). After a relative straight-forward first set, Coton dropped the second and it became a battle for the third. She grabbed a break to lead 6-5 but could not serve it out, necessitating a third set tiebreaker. Playing inspired tennis, Coton jumped out to an early lead and held on to win 7-5. The Coton win evened the team score at 2-2.
In the next match to finish, Senior Courtney Schulte dropped the first set at No. 2, but came rallying back to win the second, favoring her overpowering forehand to win big points. In the third, Andrea Vasiljevic won a majority of extended rallies and was able to sneak by Schulte for the win 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, giving Oral Roberts the lead 3-2.
Remi Immler dropped the opening set to Ximena Puentes, who drew just enough errors to win the match for the Eagles 6-3, 6-1, deciding the match for Oral Roberts. With the team result decided, Raffa Mora at No. 5 lost a third set tiebreaker 10-8 to bring the final score to 5-2.
The Bears ended the regular season with an 8-12 record (5-6 Big Sky) and will head to the Big Sky Conference tournament in Phoenix, Arizona on April 27th. The win for Oral Roberts improves their record to 14-10 overall (3-3 Summit). Today's match was the final home match for UNC graduating seniors Beth Coton, Courtney Schulte, and Marissa Baca.
