GREELEY, Colo. – The Bears clinched a spot in the Big Sky tournament last weekend and have the opportunity to end the regular season on a high note with home matches against Colorado State and Oral Roberts this weekend. The match versus Colorado State will be played on Thursday, April 20th at 1:00 pm in Greeley. Then on Saturday, the Bears take on Oral Roberts at 10:00 am, which will also be senior day.
Women's Tennis (8-10, 5-6 Big Sky)
Last Time Out: The Bears controlled their own destiny to make the Big Sky Conference tournament, but fell to Southern Utah at home 4-3 on Saturday. All three doubles matches were tightly contested but SUU was able to win at No. 1 and No. 3 to take the team doubles point. Bears' singles wins came from Courtney Schulte at No. 3 against Charity Sagiao 6-2, 6-1. Marissa Baca won her match at No. 4 against Cloe Stocking 6-0, 6-3 and Ella Mora got past Tere Enrique Schmidt at No. 5, 6-3, 6-2. UNC clinched a spot anyway when North Dakota fell to Montana State 6-1.
Need to Know: Despite the loss, UNC secured a spot in the Big Sky Tournament next week in Phoenix. The appearance ends a two year hiatus from the conference tournament. The Bears will be the No. 5 seed in the tournament.
Scouting Colorado State: The Rams have struggled in their conference schedule this season (0-5), but carry an 8-12 record overall. Emily Kolbow, a sophomore from Hartland, Wisconsin has played No. 1 singles all season for the Rams, going 5-13. Kolbow and freshman Alyssa Grijalva have had a respectable season at No. 1 doubles and have a record of 9-5 as a pair. Last weekend, the Rams lost 5-2 to Air Force and 4-3 to New Mexico. They are 2-7 on the road this spring. CSU is coached by Jarod Camerota who is in his second year with the team, first as head coach.
Scouting Oral Roberts: The Golden Eagles have a 13-9 record on the year, (5-3 conference) and are coming off a pair of victories against Seminole State 5-2 and Western Illinois 4-3. They will be playing Denver the evening before visiting Greeley. Oral Roberts has an experienced roster, with two seniors, two juniors, four sophomores and one freshman. Sophomore Ceijenia Cornelius plays No. 1 singles for the Golden Eagles and had a three set win in her last match to give her team a narrow 4-3 win against Western Illinois.
Worthless Stat: The last time the Bears made the Big Sky Conference tournament was 2014. Current players Marissa Baca, Beth Coton, and Courtney Schulte were all members of that team.
