GREELEY, Colo. – UNC Women's Tennis will continue their homestand this week as they prepare to take on Big Sky foe North Dakota on March 12th at 10:00am. They will then host in-state rival Colorado on March 14th at 2:30pm. Both matches will take place at Work Out West health and fitness center in Greeley.
Women's Tennis (4-5, 1-2 Big Sky)
Last Time Out: The Bears split a pair of weekend matches on February 25th and 26th, losing 7-0 to Wyoming and then rebounding to defeat Colorado College 7-0. Against the Tigers, they won all three doubles matches and did not lose a single set in singles. Among the highlights for the Bears was Beth Coton at No. 2 defeating Caroline James 6-0, 6-0 and Remi Immler at No. 6 beating Morgan Smith 6-0, 6-0. After the matches last weekend, Head Coach Brenda (Vlasek) Gallegos was encouraged by the compete level of her team.
"The team showed up to compete and fight hard in doubles today and the majority of our singles matches. I'm proud of our efforts and believe that if we continue to show up the way we did today, that the rest of our season will go well. We will continue to stress just how important it is for everyone to show up to compete hard on the same day, as well as working hard during our practices in preparation for upcoming matches."
Need to Know: Anna Battersby has been playing No. 1 singles for most of the spring for UNC, amassing a 2-5 record at that spot. Playing No. 2 doubles, Marissa Baca and Anna Battersby have the best winning percentage on the team with a 5-2 record. The pair came closest to defeating a tough Wyoming team on February 25th, losing the match in a tiebreaker 7-6(4).
Scouting North Dakota (6-7 overall, 4-5 Big Sky): The Fighting Hawks come in to face the Bears on a two-match win streak. Those wins came at home against Omaha (5-2) and Southern Utah (4-3). They have had some lineup consistency in singles and are led by Fr. Ella Hassall who has played eight matches in the No. 1 spot. Before coming to North Dakota, Hassall represented New Zealand at the 2013 junior Fed Cup World Finals in Mexico. In doubles, Head Coach Tom Wynne has gone with nine different doubles combinations. Soph. Preethi Kasilingham and Sen. Faith Lee have a 4-4 record playing together at No. 1 doubles.
Scouting Colorado (8-3 overall, 0-0 Conf.): This will be the second meeting of the two teams this year. Colorado won their first meeting in January, defeating the Bears 5-2 in Boulder. UNC got wins in the match at No. 4 singles where Courtney Schulte defeated Fr. Chloe Hule 7-5, 6-2. Lily Ana Kruetzer also won at No. 6 against Jr. Kyra Wojcik in a super tiebreaker 6-3, 2-6, 10-5. The Bears will likely need to flip more singles matches in their favor if they hope to win the second time around. Since defeating UNC in their first match of the year, the Buffs have gone on to defeat difficult opponents Air Force (4-3), Colorado State (7-0), and Utah State (4-2).
Worthless Stat: The Bears continue to get better every time they play Colorado. In 2015, they lost 7-0 to the Buffs. In 2016, they lost 6-1. This season, the score was 5-2 Colorado. Will the trend continue?
