GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado women's tennis will continue its four-match road swing this weekend when they face a pair of Big Sky opponents in Pocatello, Idaho and Ogden, Utah. The Bears will play Idaho State on Saturday April 1st at 10:00am, then Weber State on Sunday February 2nd, also starting at 10:00am.
Women's Tennis (6-8, 3-4 Big Sky)
Last Time Out: The Bears lost a pair of 6-1 matches last weekend. The first was to Sacramento State, where Courtney Schulte picked up the lone win, a 10-5 decision in a tiebreaker for the third set. Against UC-Davis, the Bears were able to snag the team doubles point, getting victories at No. 1 spot with Remi Immler and Beth Coton 6-3 and then at No. 3 including Ella Mora and Lily Ana-Kreutzer in a 7-5 set.
Head Coach Brenda Gallegos had some positive things to say after the matches, despite the losses. "Although we did not come away with the win the ladies fought very hard in all six singles matches. Our senior, Courtney was especially impressive this weekend. Courtney played excellent tennis all weekend. Courtney lead the Bears with a though win over Sac State and although she did not pick up the win against UC Davis she was the best singles match of the day for the lady bears."
Need to Know: Despite a losing record overall, the Bears have a winning record in doubles at 21-16. Their most successful duo is the No. 3 pairing, Marissa Baca and Anna Battersby, who are 8-3 this spring. Battersby continues to play No. 1 singles and is 4-8 from that spot. Courtney Schulte has split time in the singles lineup between No. 3 and No. 4 and is the only player on the team with a winning singles record at 7-6.
Scouting Idaho State (5-9, 3-3 Big Sky): Idaho State is by far the youngest team in the Big Sky Conference. They graduated six seniors last season and this year the team is made up entirely of freshmen. Last weekend, the Bengals played a pair of matches, first defeating Arizona Christian 7-0, then losing to Grand Canyon 6-1.
Scouting Weber State (1-11, 1-2 Big Sky): Weber State is hoping to snap a four match losing streak this weekend, having lost to Nevada (5-2), UC Davis (7-0), Sacramento State (4-1), and Utah (7-0) over that stretch. The team consists of zero seniors, two juniors, four sophomores, and one freshman.
Worthless Stat: The match against Weber State will be an opportunity for UNC to pick up a win against a team they have not defeated since February 2014. Conversely, Northern Colorado has not lost to Idaho State in women's tennis in over ten years.
