Pocatello, Id.- The University of Northern Colorado women's tennis team lost a close match to Big Sky opponent Idaho State 4-3 on Saturday. Things started well for the Bears when they took the team doubles point by winning at No. 2 and No. 3.
Idaho State tied the match 1-1 when Huibre-Mare Botes took care of UNC's Beth Coton in straight sets at No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-2. The Bengals then took the lead when Louise-Mare Botes took care of Courtney Schulte at No. 4 by a score of 6-3, 6-2. The Bears retook the lead 3-2 on wins by Marissa Baca and Anna Battersby, each taking three sets to dismantle their Idaho State singles opponents Melissa Coburn and Hristina Cvetkovic respectively at No. 4 and No. 1.
Unfortunately for the visiting Bears, Idaho State was able to win shortly after at No. 5 and No. 6 singles to give the team the win 4-3 for the match. Megan Poe defeated Ella Mora at No. 5 in straight sets, 7-6(3), 6-2 and Angela Walker took care of Lily-Ana Kruetzer 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6.
With the loss the Bears season record drops to 6-9 overall (3-5 Big Sky). They will play again tomorrow morning against Weber State in Ogden, Utah starting at 10:00am, then return to Greeley to finish out the regular season with four straight home matches, starting with Portland State.
