UNC women's tennis fell 6-1 to both Sacramento State and UC Davis
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Northern Colorado women's tennis head west to California for a pair of matches this weekend against Sacramento State and UC Davis. The Bears ended up going 0-2 against the Hornets and Aggies.
The weekend began on Saturday when they took on Big Sky foe, Sacramento State. Sac State got the better of UNC in a 6-1 decision.
The Hornets earned the team doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and 3 spot. The duo of Anna Battersby and Marissa Baca won their match at the No. 2 spot though 6-4.
In singles play Northern Colorado came away with just one win, at the No. 3 spot.
Courtney Schulte represented the team there taking down Andie Mouzes of Sacramento State in 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-5) fashion. The Hornets took the remaining five singles matches, with just one of those going three sets. That was the No. 5 match between Ella Mora and Carolina Chernyetsky. Chernyetsky took the back and forth match 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-3).
On Sunday, UNC traveled to UC Davis where they fell to the Aggies 6-1.
The team battled strong in doubles play as they squeaked out the team's doubles point. Northern Colorado won at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots with the pairs of Remi Immler and Beth Coton, and Ella Mora and Lily Ana Krutzer. They won by the scores of 6-3 and 7-5, respectively. The team almost earned the clean sweep, falling 7-5 at the No. 2 spot.
Despite having all of the momentum, UNC was swept in singles play. Courtney Schlute was the closest to picking up a win at the No. 3 spot, falling 5-7, 6-1 (7).
"We had three of the best doubles matches that we have had all season. The lady bears competed very well," head coach Brenda Gallegos said. "We carried that over into our singles play today. Although we did not come away with the win the ladies fought very hard in all six singles matches. Our senior, Courtney was especially impressive this weekend. Courtney played excellent tennis all weekend. Courtney lead the Bears with a though win over Sac State and although she did not pick up the win against UC Davis she was the best singles match of the day for the lady bears."
Northern Colorado will next be in action on April 1 when they travel to Pocatello, Idaho to face Big Sky opponent Idaho State.
