Bears to face Sacramento State; UC-Davis over the Weekend
GREELEY, Colo. – UNC women's tennis will be in sunny California this weekend to play Sacramento State on Saturday at 11:00 am, and then UC Davis on Sunday beginning at 12:00pm. The Bears are coming off a hard fought 4-3 victory over Montana last weekend, a match that leveled their season record to 6-6 overall and also their record in the Big Sky Conference to 3-3.
Women's Tennis (6-6, 3-3 Big Sky)
Last Time Out: The Bears defeated Montana 4-3 at Butler Hancock Tennis courts in Greeley. With the wind being a factor at times during doubles play, UNC was able to accommodate to those conditions and earn the team point. The doubles pairs of Remi Immler and Beth Coton at No. 1 and Marissa Baca and Anna Battersby at No. 2 won their respective matches 6-3 and 6-4 for Northern Colorado.
Having the team point in hand, the Bears looked to close out the match with a win at three of the six single matches. All six matches were highly contested decided by a key point here and there. Northern Colorado was able to pick up the final three points to earn the match win. Those singles wins came at the No. 1, 5 and 6 spots. Battersby earned the win in the No. 1 match over Hannah Sutz of Montana 6-4, 7-6 (4).
"Sunday's match was an all-out battle from start to finish," head coach Brenda Gallegos said. "The girls worked hard for the win. Wind was definitely a factor in doubles, and the team who handled the conditions the best won their match. I'm proud of how we adapted to the conditions and just focused on our matches. As a team, we are doing a much better job of setting up points and executing when given the opportunity now."
Need to Know: Ella Mora, Courtney Schulte, and Remi Immler maintain winning records in singles this spring. In doubles the team has found even more success, with an 18-13 overall record, good for a .581 win percentage. Gallegos continues to roll with the same three doubles pairings, which have developed good chemistry through consistency of playing together. They are Beth Coton and Remi Immler at No. 1, Ella Mora and Courtney Schulte at No. 2, and Marissa Baca and Anna Battersby at No. 3.
Scouting Sacramento State (6-10, 4-2 Big Sky): Sacramento State has played a difficult non-conference schedule, which is reflected in their overall record. However, they have won some close matches in the Big Sky, taking down Idaho State 4-3 last weekend and Montana 4-3 earlier this March. In their last match, they fell to Saint Mary's 4-0. The Hornets are led by junior Ana Loaiza Esquivias at the No. 1 singles spot. She went undefeated in Big Sky matches last season and is 11-3 in all competitions so far this spring.
Scouting UC Davis (12-5, 1-2 Big West): The Aggies are 3-0 so far this season against Big Sky opponents, with wins over Weber State (7-0), Montana (7-0), and Northern Arizona (4-3). They have a well-balanced lineup consisting of two seniors, three juniors, two sophomores, and two freshmen. Depth at singles has been a strength for UC Davis and Nikita Pradeep at No. 5 is undefeated at that spot with a 9-0 record. The Aggies are equally strong in doubles and as a team, with a record of 35-26 (.574 winning percentage).
Worthless Stat: Northern Colorado women's tennis has not played UC Davis since before 2007.
