UNC women's tennis defeated Montana 4-3 at home Sunday.
GREELEY – Northern Colorado women's tennis closed out its weekend with a hard fought 4-3 victory over Montana at the Butler-Hancock Tennis Courts. The win moves the Bears to .500 for both the year (6-6) and in Big Sky play (3-3).
"Today's match was an all-out battle from start to finish," head coach Brenda Gallegos said. "The girls worked hard for the win today. Wind was definitely a factor in doubles, and the team who handled the conditions the best won their match. I'm proud of how we adapted to the conditions and just focused on our matches. As a team, we are doing a much better job of setting up points and executing when given the opportunity now."
With the wind being a factor at times during doubles play, UNC was able to adopt to those conditions and earn the team point. The doubles pairs of Remi Immler and Beth Coton at No. 1 and Marissa Baca and Anna Battersby at No. 2 won their respective matches 6-3 and 6-4 for Northern Colorado.
Having the team point in hand, the Bears looked to close out the match with a win at three of the six single matches. All six matches were highly contested decided by a key point here and there. Northern Colorado was able to pick up the final three points to earn the match win. Those singles wins came at the No. 1, 5 and 6 spots.
Battersby earned the win in the No. 1 match over Hannah Sutz of Montana 6-4, 7-6 (4), which impressed her coach in the way she played.
"I'm pleased with Anna's performance today as she found a way to capitalize when ahead" Gallegos said, "It may not of happened straightaway, but she found a way to stick to the game plan and pull out the win."
Meanwhile Immler earned a spot at the No. 6 spot in today's match, coming out from the jump and competing all the way through. Her strong game led her to a quick 6-2, 6-1 win.
"Remi walked out on the court with a mission," Gallegos said. "I could just tell from the beginning that she had control of her match and was working hard and fighting for every point."
The other win in singles play for UNC belonged to Ella Mora. She won a hard fought 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 match against Montana's Cam Kincaid.
Northern Colorado will now hit the road next weekend heading to take on a tough Sacramento State team on Saturday, March 25.
