FINAL RESULTS
LAS VEGAS, Nevada – The outdoor track and field season is off and running for Northern Colorado. The Bears wrapped up their first meet of the season at the UNLV Invite on Saturday, and once again familiar faces stood out of the crowd for the team.
Best Finishes:
Sophomore, Cammy Sargent, who had one of the best indoor seasons for UNC, picked up right where she left off. In only her second time competing in the women's 1500m race, Sargent wowed the Blue and Gold faithful with a time of 4:42.78, good for second place in the field of 37. It would only be right that Sargent's name be added to the Top 10 list in the event, as she now holds the seventh fastest time in the event in program history.
Another Bear boasted a Top 8 time in the women's 100m dash in senior, Moriah Zachary. She clocked in at 11.95 seconds, taking sixth overall.
Building on the momentum of her solid heptathlon finish, senior, Deandra Elcock took to the blocks in the women's 100m hurdles. Elcock worked her way to a sixth place showing for UNC, coming across in 14.53 seconds.
In the women's field events, Northern Colorado saw more success from junior jumper, Julliette Cossey and senior vaulter, Karli Jelden.
Jelden notched a fourth place showing in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 3.65m (11-11.75), while Cossey recorded a second place finish in the triple jump, hitting the pit at 11.50m (37-8.75). The mark now sits at the sixth farthest jump in the school record book.
Cossey also dabbled in the women's long jump on the day. Her mark sat at 5.30m (17-4.74), taking seventh place in the event.
On the men's side, senior sprinter, Alex Mead proved to be a staple for the program. Mead cruised to sixth place finish with a sub-11.00 second time of 10.89.
He also solidified a Top 10 posting in the 200m dash, capturing ninth place with a final time of 22.06 seconds.
Fellow senior sprinter, Jordan Medina was in fine form in the 400m dash. He walked off the track with an eighth place finish, breaking the tape in 48.82 seconds.
Another Top 8 time on the men's side came from sophomore, Evan Keely in the 800m run. Keely came around in 1:55.57, earning seventh place on the leaderboard.
Freshman distance runner, Jeremy Romero cracked into UNC record book in the 1500m run. The clock read 4:05.95 as Romero came across the finish line, taking 10th place in the event, and he also now holds the 10th fastest time in the event in the program's history.
Senior jumper, Jayson Dupre highlighted the field events for the men's squad. Dupre placed second overall in the high jump, clearing the bar at 1.90m (6-2.75), and took fourth overall in the triple jump, with a mark of 13.81m (45-3.75).
As a team, the women finished in fifth place overall with 53 points, while the men came in 10th with 24 points.
Up Next:
Northern Colorado will be back in action next week in the Centennial State. The Bears make the quick journey to Fort Collins to compete in the Fum McGraw Tri-Meet on March 25.
