Cal Poly Pitching Too Much for @BearsSoftball

San Louis Obispo, Calif – Cal Poly pitchers were causing all kinds of trouble for Northern Colorado batters Wednesday. The Mustangs took both games of the day's double-header, first taking the Bears, 2-1, and then blanking UNC, 5-0.
GAME 1
Heading into Wednesday's matchup, the featured battle was clearly between each school's starting pitchers. In the first few innings, the two did not disappoint. Back-to-back scoreless innings, and each in their own different way, highlighted the start of the contest.
Reddacliff relied mostly on her stellar defense, recording just one strikeout, but forcing the Mustangs into a plethora of ground ball and fly ball outs. Sierra Hyland on the other hand, put Cal Poly on her shoulders, recording eight strikeouts in just the first four innings.
Northern Colorado struck first blood in the top of the third inning. After Cheyenne Talmadge singled to third base, Erica Dick used a double to bring her home all the way from first, giving the Bears the slight lead, 1-0.
Cal Poly waited until the fourth inning to launch its strongest attack of the contest up until that point. After scoring a run on a throwing error, the Mustangs immediately loaded the bases with only one out. Playing her part in a defensive stand, Reddacliff forced a line out to herself, then doubled up the runner at first to end the inning.
It was aces wild all the way through the seventh inning in California. Despite having the winning run only sixty feet away, the pesky Bears defense counterpunched for two straight ground outs to force extra innings.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, with the international tiebreaker in effect, Cal Poly managed to advanced their placed runner to third on a ground out to Jordyn Wiatrak. The very next at-bat brought everything crashing down, as the Mustang single brought in the winning run and ended the game, 2-1.
GAME 2
Cal Poly breezed through to top of the order in the first inning, looking to take an early lead in the day's second game.
A single and a triple in the first three mustang at-bats brought around Cal Poly's first run of the inning. Repeating the pattern, the Mustangs doubled up on a single and a triple, jumping out to the 3-0 lead after the first frame.
Sophia Taylor singled up the middle for hit in the second inning, but first base was as far as Cal Poly would allow her to advance, standing tall for two more groundouts.
Things cooled off for both teams until the bottom of the third inning. A double and a single down the left field line plated a fourth run for the Mustangs. An inning later, three consecutive singles pushed a fifth run across and suddenly the Bears trailed, 5-0.
Meanwhile, offensively, Northern Colorado was running out of gas. Combined, in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, UNC mustered only one hit, coming on a Jordyn Wiatrak double. Not even last weekend's hero, Rachel Johnson was able to bring around the runner in scoring position.
When it came down the game's final frame, Emily Holtz, Sophia Taylor and Kaley Garcia each go their chance to start a rally. There wasn't any magic in the air, however, as the Bears went down in order, falling to the Mustangs, 5-0.
KEY STAT
Strikeouts – Northern Colorado pitching was able to only punch out two Mustang batters, while Cal Poly struck out 25 UNC batters.
MOST VALUABLE BEAR
Erica Dick – Dick went 3-6 (.500) on the day with the Bears' only RBI.
IN THEIR WORDS
Shana Easley, Head Coach
"We needed to do a better job today having confidence and focused aggressiveness in the box against their pitching. A few people stood out as good competitors today, however, including Jayme doing a great job in the circle, giving us a chance to win in game one and Erica competing with good focus offensively and defensively."
NOTABLES
-Jayme Reddacliff pitched 7.1 innings and did not give up an earned run.
-On the day, Northern Colorado pitching gave up only three walks.
-Sophia Taylor compiled seven put outs, with six assists and did not commit an error, starting each game at second base.
-For the first time in four games, UNC did not steal a base in the contest.
