Bears beat Colorado College, lose to Wyoming
GREELEY, Colo.- Northern Colorado women's tennis split a pair of matches at home over the weekend. On Saturday, Wyoming got by the Bears 7-0, but on Sunday, UNC rebounded for a 7-0 victory over Colorado College.
Northern Colorado -0 | Wyoming -7
Wyoming took all three doubles matches to take the 1-0 lead entering singles play. The duo of Elisa Koonik and Tessa Van Der Ploeg defeated Beth Coton and Remi Immler, 6-3, followed by Miranda Talbert and Magdalena Stencel at No. 3 earning a 7-6(4) win over Northern Colorado's Ella Mora and Courtney Schulte. At the No. 2 spot, Dorottya Jonas and Ana Tkachenko beat Anna Battersby and Marissa Baca, 7-6(4).
Momentum carried over to singles play with the Bears losing all six singles spots. Anna Battersby lost 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 and Dorrottya Jonas defeated Beth Coton, 7-5, 6-3. Marissa Baca lost two tiebreakers in her match against Tessa Van Der Ploeg who won 7-6, 7-6. Baca's result clinched the match for Wyoming. At the number No. 4, Milka Genkova won in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 versus Courtney Schulte followed by Elisa Koonik not dropping a game against Lily-Ana Kreutzer, 6-0, 6-0. Finally, Tkachenko closed it out with a 6-4, 6-1 victory against Northern Colorado's Remi Immler.
Bears head coach Brenda (Vlasek) Gallegos was encouraged by the compete level of her team against a difficult opponent.
"The team showed up to compete and fight hard in doubles today and the majority of our singles matches. I'm proud of our efforts and believe that if we continue to show up the way we did today, that the rest of our season will go well. We will continue to stress just how important it is for everyone to show up to compete hard on the same day, as well as working hard during our practices in preparation for upcoming matches.
Gallegos also praised the performances of Baca and Schulte in singles competition.
"I was pleased with Courtney Schulte and Marissa Baca's performance today in singles. Both players fought throughout the entire match and never gave up. Courtney did a great job of setting up the points and really served well."

Beth Coton and Remi Immler started the Bears off with an emphatic victory at No. 1 doubles 6-1. Marissa Baca and Anna Battersby followed five minutes later with a 6-3 win at No. 2.
In singles, Anna Battersby was the first to finish for Northern Colorado, using her consistent ground game to move her opponent around the court and work her way up to the net to end points. She dropped just one game en route to a 6-1, 6-0 score.
At No. 2, Beth Coton was able to overpower her opponent won without losing a game 6-0, 6-0. The rest of the Bears lineup followed, all winning in straight sets, sealing the shutout win 7-0. Northern Colorado will play Big Sky opponent North Dakota in their next scheduled match on March 12th at 10:00 at Work Out West Health & Fitness Center in Greeley.
