GREELEY, Colo. – With their six-match win streak still intact, the Bears will go on the road this weekend to face a pair of Big Sky opponents. On Saturday February 25th, they play Idaho State at 10:00am in Pocatello and on Sunday they travel to Ogden, Utah for a match against Weber State at 10:00am.
Men's Tennis (6-4, 3-1 Big Sky)
Last Time Out: The Bears played three matches in three days this past weekend, including Creighton on Saturday, CSU-Pueblo on Sunday, and Southern Utah on Monday. Creighton was their most challenging opponent, but the Bears prevailed 4-3 helped by winning the team doubles point. They then cruised to a 6-1 win versus CSU-Pueblo. Monday's match against Southern Utah was closer than originally expected, but the Bears pulled through 4-2 with junior Cassell King getting the victory at No. 6 singles to clinch it.
Need to Know: Northern Colorado played eight consecutive home matches at Work Out West going 6-2 over that span. Their most impressive match was a 5-2 victory over Montana on February 10th. It was the first time in the Division I era that Northern Colorado men's tennis has defeated the Grizzlies.
Good to Know: Senior Alex Vakouftsis has been the most consistent player for the Bears this spring. Vakouftsis is the only player on the team with a winning record in singles (5-4) and doubles (5-3). His calm demeanor on court and powerful forehand has allowed him to dispatch opponents at the No. 3 singles position.
Worthless Stat: Last season the Bears lost to Weber State 6-1. Former Bear Austin Mayo beat Jakub Gewert 7-5, 6-4 at No. 1 singles.
Scouting Idaho State: The Bengals are 4-4 (0-1 Big Sky) and have yet to lose a match at home. Last weekend, they played three matches, which included a 4-3 win against Seattle, a 7-0 loss to Idaho, and finally a 7-0 win versus Lewis-Clark State College. Idaho State has an experienced roster of players, made up of six seniors, one junior, one sophomore, and no freshmen. Edin Sebastian, a 6'4" senior from Sigtuna, Sweden plays No. 1 singles for the Bengals.
Scouting Weber State: The Wildcats dominated the Big Sky Conference regular season in 2016, posting a 10-1 record. In the conference tournament, they defeated Sacramento State 4-1 and Idaho 4-3 to win the title. The Big Sky Conference named Weber State's Kris van Wyk as Big Sky Player of the Week for his stellar performance at the UNLV Invitational last week. Weber State men's tennis split the four-match weekend in Las Vegas at UNLV, going 2-2. Van Wyk came out of the weekend with a 3-4 singles record with the final singles match of the weekend going unfinished and 3-4 in doubles play.
