Northern Colorado men's tennis dropped a pair of matches to Idaho State and Weber State over the weekend
GREELEY – The Northern Colorado men's tennis team hit the road for the first time in a month this weekend, going to a pair of Big Sky contenders in Idaho State and Weber State. The Bears entered the weekend with a six-match win streak before taking on ISU and WSU, whom defeated UNC by identical scores of 6-1. The pair of losses moves the team's record to 6-6 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
Northern Colorado took on Idaho State Saturday in Pocatello. In the match ISU earned the first point of the match when they won the No. 1 and 2 doubles pairings by scores of 6-4 and 6-1, respectively. The Bengals carried the momentum of winning the doubles point with them into singles play, picking up the three remaining points they needed for the win at the No. 2, 3 and 4 singles, before UNC earned its lone point. Connor Finerty was the player who earned that point at the No. 1 spot defeating Idaho State's Sebastian Edin 6-4, 6-3. All six matches against ISU were won in straight sets.
After falling to the Bengals on Saturday, UNC traveled south to Ogden when they faced defending Big Sky Champion Weber State. The Wildcats showed they are still the team to beat by making quick work of the Bears. WSU won the No. 2 and 3 doubles match, earning the team point while Alex Vakouftsis and Hayden Cramer battled with Shao-Po Yin and Stefan Cooper at the No. 1 spot in a match that ended up 7-6 (7-4) in favor of Weber.
After going to the tie breaker in his doubles match, Vakouftsis proceeded to go to a tie breaker in his No. 3 singles match. After winning the first set over Kris Van Wyk 6-3, Vakouftsis was forced to a tie breaker after dropping the second set 6-7. Since the match had been decided, the players went to a tie breaker to determine the final point of the match, in which Vakouftsis survived an 11-9 battle, earning the lone point of the day for UNC.
