@UNCO_MensTennis Makes it Six in a Row, Defeats Southern Utah 4-2

GREELEY, Colo.- Cassell King started slow, then came back to win in straight sets, and the Bears went on to defeat Southern Utah 4-2 Monday morning in Greeley. With the victory, Northern Colorado extended its winning streak to six, finishing off their eight-match homestand with a record of 6-2.
Southern Utah won two of the three doubles matches to lead 1-0, thanks to a tiebreaker that Guy Feigoin and Ben Yeacker won 7-5. The Bears rebounded in singles with No. 4 Hayden Cramer and No. 2 Kyle Pease winning in straight sets.Southern Utah freshman Conor Tordoff got by Connor Finerty 7-5, 6-4 at No. 1 before Cassell King was able to close out the match for the Bears.
With the win Monday, UNC improves its season record to 6-4 (3-1 Big Sky) and will travel to Pocatello, Idaho for their next match on February 25th against Idaho State.

Doubles Breakdown:
1- Hayden Cramer and Alex Vakouftsis lost very few points on serve and earned a break to go up 4-2. Sergio Palacio and Micah Alba were unable to recover as UNC won the set 6-2. Time of the match: 30 minutes.
2- With the other two doubles matches split, the No. 2 match became the deciding match for the team point. Northern Colorado earned a pair of break chances 30-40, leading 6-5 in the set, but were unable to capitalize and the match went to a tiebreaker. Down 2-0 early in the tiebreaker, the Bears stormed back to win four straight points, but lost when King double faulted down 6-5.
3- Southern Utah picked up the lead 4-3 on Agustin Lombardi's service game. They were then able to close out the set 6-3. Time of the match: 33 minutes
Singles Breakdown:
1- Southern Utah freshman Conor Tordoff made very few errors in the match, using his backhand slice to effectively stay in points and work his way to the net with a chip and charge approach. Connor Finerty lost the first four games, but worked his way back to shift the momentum and tie the set 5-5 before losing a deciding deuce point and the set 7-5. The second set was much of the same with Tordoff coming out on top by a pair of games 6-4.
2- Number two singles was a match in which both players played a large number of baseline rallies, Pease was consistently better than his opponent off the forehand wing, making less unforced errors.
3- Southern Utah freshman Guy Feigin was playing through an apparent injury, but still proved to be able to move well and come up with some very good shots against Alex Vakouftsis of UNC. Vakouftsis earned the critical break of serve he needed to win the first set 7-5. He did the same in the second to win the match 6-4, 6-4.
4- Hayden Cramer came out with aggression of energy, winning the first set against SUU freshman Nicolas de Enrique Schmidt quickly 6-3. Cramer was willing to come forward, often serving and volleying and the strategy proved effective throughout most of the match. Cramer won the second set 7-5.
5- Agustin Lombardi won a tight first set 7-5, and kept himself ahead by a game for most of the second. He was doing a nice job moving his opponent around the court and controlling points when the match was called at 4-4 in the second set.
6- Cassell King got off to a bit of a slow start in the match, but rallied back to take the first set 6-4. In the second, King was the more consistent player, getting himself in position to serve out the match from 5-2. Closing proved to be a challenge though, and Sergio Palacio came back to get within a game 5-4. King then hit a beautiful stab volley on match point to win it 6-4, 6-4. The win secured the Bears team victory 4-2.
