MOSCOW, Idaho- The University of Northern Colorado women's tennis team finished their two match road trip on Sunday with a 7-0 loss to the University of Idaho. The Vandals quickly jumped out to a 4-0 lead, and finished strong to secure their fourth shutout victory of the season.
The Bears No. 1 doubles team, Beth Coton and Remi Immler fell 6-1 to Idaho's Marianna Petrei and Lucia Badillos. Maria Tavares and Ana Batiri then bested Northern Colorado's Marissa Baca and Anna Battersby at the No. 2 position 6-3 to secure the team doubles point.
In singles, the Vandals were too strong for the Bears. At No. 1, Anna Battersby fell to Marianna Petrei 6-0, 6-0 and Beth Coton lost to Lucia Badillos at No. 2 6-2, 6-0.
The high point of the match for Northern Colorado came from No. 5 singles player Lily-Ana Kreutzer. After dropping the first set 6-1, Kruetzer battled back to take the second 6-4. In the third set tiebreaker, Kreutzer won five straight points to earn two match points at 9-7, but Watabe came storming back to win it 12-10.
With the loss, the Bears record drops to 3-4, 1-2 in the Big Sky Conference and the Vandals record improves to 5-3, (3-0 Big Sky). Northern Colorado will be back in Greeley to play its next opponent, Wyoming on February 25th at 1:00pm.It will be the beginning of a six-match homestand which will include three Big Sky opponents.
