Bears Extend Winning Streak to Five
GREELEY, Colo.- In men's tennis, Northern Colorado got a strong performance from the entire team Sunday as they went on to defeat in-state foe Colorado State-Pueblo 6-1. The match started out on the right note, as the Bears won all three matches in doubles play including a 6-2 outing at No. 2 with Kyle Pease and Cassell King.
In singles, Hayden Cramer defeated CSU-Pueblo freshman Rafeal Abreu at the No. 4 spot in just over an hour, and Connor Finerty followed five minutes later with his own straight set victory over James Ryan at No. 1.
Securing the team victory was Alex Vakouftsis at the No. 3 singles. He grabbed a tight first set 7-5 when his opponent, Steven Alcala double-faulted on set point. Then in the second, Vakouftsis played with more confidence to take the set and the match 7-5, 6-2.
The victory against the Thunderwolves sealed the Bears' fifth win in a row. They improve their season record to 5-4 overall, 2-1 in the Big Sky Conference. So far, they have won 5-of-7 on their current homestand.
Northern Colorado will wrap up its eight-matches in a row at home on Monday when they face Big Sky opponent Southern Utah at 9:00am at Work Out West.

Time of the match: 3 hours, 20 minutes
Doubles Breakdown:
1- Strong serving kept the Thunderwolves close, but Vakouftsis and Cramer were superior at the net, ultimately overpowering David Mould and Nick Wade at No. 1 doubles. The final score was 6-4. Time of the match: 26 minutes.
2- Kyle Pease and Cassell King earned a break of serve to take a 3-1 lead and continually frustrated CSU-Pueblo's James Ryan and Steven Alcala with good passing shots and dominant returning. They got another break of serve in the final game to win 6-2. Time of the match: 24 minutes.
3- Agustin Lombardi and Connor Finerty jumped out to a 5-2 lead, but Finerty was unable to serve out the match making closing out the set a bit more complicated. Lombardi held for 6-5 and then a passing shot up the middle for Lombardi on match point finally gave the Bears the set 7-5. Time of the match: 39 minutes
Singles Breakdown:
1- Connor Finerty was able to move his opponent, Jake Ryan around the court effectively throughout the match, mixing up slice and topspin shots and keeping Ryan well behind the baseline to play groundstroke shots. Finerty finished within five minutes of Cramer on court four, giving the Bears the team lead 3-0. Time of the match: 1 hour, 9 minutes.
2- The No. 2 singles was a match featured a lot of long rallies and running by both players, resulting in multiple trading of the lead in the first set. Pease barely came out on top 7-5. Predictably, the second set was just as close, this time freshman Nick Wade won it 6-3. A ten-point tiebreaker was played in lieu of a third set with the team match decided, with Ryan winning by just two points 11-9. Time of the match: 1 hour, 49 minutes.
3- Despite some uncharacteristic errors in the first set Alex Vakouftsis grinded out just enough points to win it 7-5 when CSU-Pueblo junior Steven Alcala doubled-faulted on break point. In the second, Vakouftsis was much more consistent, playing well and breezing to a 6-2 set win. Time of the match: 1 hour, 20 minutes.
4- Hayden Cramer played a strong first set, winning it 6-3 in just over a half hour. He used his familiar strategy of coming forward on every possible short ball he received to put pressure on his opponent at the baseline. The strategy paid off as Cramer won the match routinely 6-3, 6-2. Time of the match: 1 hour, 4 minutes.
5- Agustin Lombardi used a mix of slice and topspin shots against his opponent, junior David Mould. He played exceptionally well in the first set, winning 6-2 in only 30 minutes. It was more of the same in the second, with Lombardi taking care of the match quickly 6-3, 6-3.
6- Cassell King, a nimble player was up against sophomore Dante Alcala, who also used speed to his advantage on court. A majority of points finished with at least one player at the net, and Cassell King proved to be the better of the two in that area. His first serve also helped him win a large number of free points, helping him win in straight sets 6-4, 7-5.
