UNC Women's Tennis Defeat Eastern Washington 5-2 Saturday
CHENEY, Wash. – Northern Colorado picked up its first road win of the season Saturday afternoon beating Big Sky opponent Eastern Washington 5-2.
The Bears started by winning the team doubles point. Beth Coton and Remi Immler won their match at No. 1 doubles 6-4 against Eastern Washington's Faye Worrall and Erin Blessing. Then Anna Battersby and Marissa Baca took care of business 6-1 at No. 2 doubles against Katrina Domingo and Valentina Sottile.
Following in singles, every match was close. In 10 out of the 15 sets played between the two teams, the winner won by two games or less including a pair of second set tiebreakers.
The bottom of the singles lineup came through in the end and UNC getting wins from No. 3 Marissa Baca, No. 4 Courtney Schulte, No. 5 Lily-Ana Kreutzer, and No. 6 Rafa Mora. Mora was particularly impressive, winning under pressure in her second set tiebreaker 7-4. Head Coach Brenda (Vlasek) Gallegos was happy with the way the team competed in the match.
"Today's match was intense and came down to the wire. Everyone played well and fought hard. We really earned the win today after a hard fought, 5-hour match. I am proud of everyone's efforts! Rafa did an outstanding job today sticking with the game plan. She stayed patient and set up points very well and executed at the right moment."
Northern Colorado has now improved their season record to 4-3 (2-1 Big Sky) and will travel to play the University of Idaho on Sunday, February 19th. The match begins at 10:00am in Moscow, Idaho.
