Bears Win Doubles, Lose Match Against Montana State
2/12/2017 5:04:00 PM | Women's Tennis
GREELEY, Colo.- The Bears played exceptionally well in doubles, but struggled to win singles matches as Montana State defeated Northern Colorado 6-1 Sunday at Work Out West in Greeley. In doubles, Beth Coton and Remi Immler started slow, then rolled to a 6-3 win and Courtney Schulte and Ella Mora won a tiebreaker to take their doubles match at No. 3. Marissa Baca was also very close to winning her singles match. She lost to Naomi Holopainen in three sets 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
"The team came out to take care of business today in doubles. I was pleased with our heart and fire in doubles and it transitioned into the majority of our singles play," said head coach Brenda Gallegos. "We played aggressively and really executed points well in doubles. Montana State has always been a tough team to play and almost all matches could have gone either way."
With the loss to Montana State, the Bears' record drops to 2-3 overall, 0-1 in the Big Sky. Northern Colorado will travel to Cheney, Wash. to face their next opponent Eastern Washington on February 18th at 11:00am.

Time of the match: 3 hours 33 minutes
Doubles Breakdown:
1- At No. 1 doubles, Beth Coton and Remi Immler got off to a bit of a rocky start, but found their stride mid-way through the set, grabbing the lead 3-2. They began putting more first serves in and closed the net points better to grab the set 6-2. Time of the match: 28 minutes
2- Anna Battersby and Marissa Baca played arguably one of their best sets of the year, serving well and returning serves deep, putting pressure on both Montana State players. They closed it out with relative ease 6-2. Time of the match: 29 minutes
3- The No. 3 doubles match was a bit of back and forth for Courtney Schulte and Ella Mora. With the team doubles point already decided, a tiebreaker decided the match in favor of the Bears 7-6(6). Time of the match: 50 minutes.
Singles Breakdown:
1. Montana State senior Laura Middel proved to be a pesky player to win points against throughout the match, effectively using slice shots off both forehand and backhand wings. Battersby's patience was tested often and she dropped the first set 6-4. Although Battersby found herself up 4-1 in the second, Middel won the next five games to close out the match 6-4. Time of the match: 1 hour, 20 minutes.
2. Beth Coton was visibly frustrated with her own play early in her match against Montana State freshman Chloe Goyette. However, despite this, she found a way to keep the match close, dropping the first set 6-3. Unfortunately it was more of the same in the second set, which also went to Goyette 6-2. Time of the match: 1 hour.
3. Marissa Baca looked to use her speed and good footwork in her No. 3 singles match against Montana State's Naomi Holopainen, but lost a tight first set 6-4. The second set was just as close throughout and Baca came out on top 7-5. Holopainen rebounded to win the deciding third set 6-4.
4. Montana State junior Angelina Philappova was able to use strong groundstrokes to work her way to the net in many points, a strategy which proved very effective against UNC's Courtney Schulte. Schulte had a much better start to the second set, but it was not quite enough as she lost 7-5. Time of the match: 1 hour, 30 minutes.
5. Lily-Ana Kreutzer lost a pair of set tiebreakers, falling to Montana State senior Jessica Brycki 7-6, 7-6.
6. Ella Mora's match at No. 6 singles was a slugfest from the baseline, both players willing to hit hard off the forehand and backhand sides but Wanda Holopainen proving just a little bit more consistent, winning 6-4, 6-4.
